I am going to stop fretting about it untill I see him this thurs.

The muscle memory thing is making alot of sense ,.. I saw the post-

op x-rays and I am sure he must have been a carpenter in a past

life, with the amount of hardware he left in there,..I just could

not believe things could move back ....What is a " condyles " ?, ...

CaptBob....at 8 weeks are you still in elastics? , and are things

starting to move back into position for you ?

At 4 weeks ( which it will be) for me, when I see my OS again on

Thurs. ,... If it is a muscle thing ,do you think it possible to

manipulate back to where he had it...?...

More Questions ,Sorry....Did you have any pain in chin/Lip at 3/4

weeks....I usually have a high tolorance to pain ,having gone

through a 2 level laminectomy and all that goes with it a few years

ago .... however I have been in intense absolute searing ,pulsing

constant pain since he unbanded me at day 10....

He gave me amitriptelyne for nerve pain ,which maybe helps with

sleep, a bit....but does not deal with the pain .....the last few

days I have been dipping into my leftover " Dilaudid " from my back

issue days ....It really does'nt touch it except, push's the pain

back a bit, and kinda flattens me.... I have No pain in my jaw where

there are 2 plates & 12 screws....BUT my chin and bottom lip are

like a marshmallo, no feeling to the touch.....yet I am haveing this

hidieous intense nastyass pain pulsating through that area ..???

Im tellin ya Im startin to feel like a whiner......

appreciate your insight

Bob

At the risk of over simplifying things, picture a regular ball in

socket joint--which the Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ) is not.

The " ball " portion of the TMJ is the Condyle and the " socket " is

called the Mandibular Fossa.

No, I am no longer in elastics. The lack of ossification (filling the

gap with new bone)in my maxilla (Upper) is probably due to being put

in elastics too early. As I opened my mouth the elastics pulled on

the maxilla creating movement which prevented proper bone healing.

So, I am on a no chew diet with no elastics for at least three weeks.

Were the elastics working? Yes, while I wore elastics my midline

lined up perfectly. As soon as I took them off my lower midline

shifted left again. The OS tells me that it can take 6 - 8 weeks to

properly retrain the muscles.

As for pain in my chin, no, although my lower lip and chin are still

pretty numb. Ocassionaly I get a shooting pain running through my

chin, but it is very short lived. Since your pain is somewhat of a

phantom pain, I wonder is pain meds will actually help.

Be very carefull using any drug that the OS/OD did not prescribe.

Drug interactions can be dangerous. I recommend you consult with the

OS before using any drugs other than what he prescribed.

Amitriptyline hydrochloride is a very mild antidepressant and anti

anxiety drug which also has antihistamine properties.
