Reaching Farmworkers with Effective HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs

Migrant farmworkers are at an increased risk for HIV/AIDS and other

sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to lengthy periods of

separation from family, lack of accurate health information, language

barriers, cultural taboos, and other factors. The same factors that

put farmworkers at higher risk for HIV/AIDS also make them more

difficult to reach using conventional behavior change interventions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified a

number of community-level Effective Behavioral Intervention (EBI)

models targeting HIV/AIDS that can be adapted to meet the needs of

farmworkers and their families. They include the Popular Opinion

Leader (POL) model, Community Promise and the Real AIDS Prevention

Project (RAPP). In a free half-day workshop in conjunction with the

Western Migrant Stream Forum, Farmworker Justice will present an

overview of the POL, Community Promise, and RAPP models of behavior

change interventions, and contrast them with more traditional

Promotores de Salud and outreach worker models. The discussion will

include information on obtaining training and capacity building

assistance for implementing these models. At the conclusion of this

session, participants will understand the key elements of each model

with an emphasis on ways they can be adapted to meet the distinct

needs of farmworkers in their communities. Agencies and organizations

interested in reaching farmworkers with effective behavior change

programs are encouraged to attend.
