Guest guest
, What's your B-12 like? Pernicious anemia is really common in our folks. http://tinyurl.com/b7ck Good luck... Bringing ferritin up out of the basement like that is so important, and so difficult! I've been working on it for 6 months now and haven't had much improvement myself. :-( Have you been tracking your numbers on a spreadsheet over time? Have they crashed suddenly, or has their been a slow winding down? Guest guest
, My B-12 IS 590, range is 250-1100. My doctor said last year, when my labs were good, that iron deficiency could crop up in the first 5 years for guys. My 5 years are up. What a trip! Wow, my ferritin *is* in the " basement. " Actually, I don't know what any of this stuff means.....just hopeful that iron will make me feel more rested....kinda' stay tired. Guest guest
Your hematocrit and hemoglobin are your current iron levels, what's circulating around in your blood. Your ferritin is your long-term iron storage, your " savings account " , if you will. You've probably been taking out of your savings account for a while to keep up good blood levels, but no there's no more money at the bank, so you feel crummy. Hmmm, sounds like my real life! LOL Hope you find an iron supplement that brings you back to normal and helps rebuild those stores quickly. Ziobro Re: lab work , My B-12 IS 590, range is 250-1100. Guest guest
Thanks for the info, I didn't have a clue what in the heck any of them means, but that makes sense. This is one of those conversations that I've always ignored since it didn't affect me, but now I guess I'll get on the bandwagon. What iron works the best? All I can remember hearing is " black and tarry stool. They said I was normal. I spent my life being tired. Since surgery and with my supplements and red meat eating, I now have red blood. I have more energy than before, but still not normal. But then I am 60 so I don't know what's normal for a 60 year old that acts like a 12 year old. :0) Fay
Guest guest
None of the oral iron supplements worked for me. Some of us just can't get iron from pills no matter how many we take or how hard we try. I finally gave in and went to a hematologist for iron infusions after trying to play around with it for 2 years. I got my iron levels to go up, but not the ferritin so I'm just not storing it, which is why it kept crashing according to the hematologist. Well, his explanation was quite a bit longer, but that was the basic idea behind it. After 2 round of iron (1 per week for 2 weeks, I go tomorrow for the 3rd & final treatment in this series) I feel great. That tiredness is pretty much gone and I feel a lot more like myself now. He's going to test me again in a month and then 3 months to see where my iron and ferritin, etc. levels end up and then I'll probably need infusions every so often to replenish. No big deal, to me it's an easy fix. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.com® http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! ® Re: lab work Thanks for the info, I didn't have a clue what in the heck any of them means, but that makes sense.
