Guest guest
I suggest you need to do some more reading since it appears you don't have a complete grasp of the terms you use. Start by going to this groups Home page (on your left) and read the preface: " What is Gastric Bypass? " Basically there are two types of surgery, Laparoscopic and Open. Then there are different types of obesity surgery. There are several Restrictive Surgery Procedures. Then, there are Combined Restrictive and Malabsorptive Surgery procedures. There are also some other procedures that are usually no longer recommended including one called Intestinal Bypass which is what you may be referring to but is not used much anymore. You should familiarize yourself with all the different types of gastric bypass surgeries before you can ask people which they favor. Many times it is the local surgeon with the expertese that is the overriding factor and may be supported by your in network insurance policy. Some folks have educated themselves well enough to know specifically which proceedure is going to give them the best tool to lose the weight and maintain that weight loss after the 12-18 month " window of opportunity " is over. It is very easy to regain the weight that is lost if you don't understand the process and that you will be responsible for limiting your food intake after your surgery has helped you lose the weight. This is a tool for weight loss not a tool for weight loss maintenance. You will have to do the work to keep your weight loss after your surgically altered insides return to their pre surgical size. This process is called adaptation. It is built into the human survival ability to regenerate damaged tissues so we can continue to survive. After about two years you will be able to eat enough to start putting on weight again. Prepare yourself for the task ahead. It will be worth it but you should do more research. Cathy Then go to this site for the American Obesity Association: http://www.obesity.org/education/advisor.shtml > I am just curious as to if most people do the lap band or the > gastric?? Guest guest
I don't know any of the statistics, but personally, I never even considered the lap band. I wanted something permanent. Didn't see the point in doing something reversible/removable. And everything I looked up about the band.. it doesn't really work that well from what I've seen. You lose less weight, you keep less off, it's not as restrictive as the RNY, has none of the malabsorption. I tried to find the chart that compared all the types of WLS but can't find it And with the lap band, you have to have it adjusted, and I really didn't want a hole in my side for that. If I can find that chart, I'll post the link to it. The gastric bypass is considered the " gold standard " for WLS and I don't really know why anyone would choose anything else. Just my opinion in Indiana Open RNY 2/25/04 265.4/208/135 -- lap or bypass? which do you consider the best way? I am just curious as to if most people do the lap band or the gastric?? Did i make the wrong decision by choosing to have the by pass done? Should i think twice and maybe just do the lap band..
