Guest guest
Most people do not know much at all about orthognathic surgery. Since it is not surgery on any major organ or limb, some just don't understand that it qualifies as major surgery. They just figure that if it's only your jaw, you should be able to continue your regular schedule right away. Sometimes you may have to remind them about the difficult time you'll be going through after surgery. I've been speaking to a close friend of mine about preparing for surgery for months, and the other day she asked " Will you need to be put asleep? " Patience is key... > > When it comes to jaw surgery what part of major surgery do people not > get? Guest guest
You go right ahead and vent all you need to!! This is the place to do it as we understand what you are going through. Like you said, some people just don't get it, this is MAJOR surgery. And also a majorly consuming recovery, not from a pain side as much as an emotional side. You have to deal with a possible change in appearence, not being able to fully participate in social functions because so many of them evolve around food that you can't yet eat, and even trying to watch TV gets tiring when you come to realize that most commercials are about food! And for your team captain and her comments, I bet you wouldn't find her playing ball two weeks after even having wisdom teeth pulled. Would she expect you to play two weeks after giving birth? No, and that is a much more natural event to recover from!! You will go great and vent here as often as you need to! a > > When it comes to jaw surgery what part of major surgery do people not > get? Guest guest
I know how you feel. I am a dance teacher and am having double jaw surgery in the summer. I do not have a date set yet but i am hoping for early june. The owner of the studio asked me about 4 days in a row if I could teach at our dance camp over the summer. She was like well cant you just wait till after the camp to have the surgery...umm..no considering it will take about 2 months to maybe feel back to myself again and I would like to maybe enjoy a week of my summer!!! > > > > > > When it comes to jaw surgery what part of major surgery do people > > not > > > get? Guest guest
I encountered some similar attitudes while I was getting ready for surgery earlier this winter. It's not necessarily any consolation, but I think that some of this comes from people who don't get that orthognathic surgery is serious, MAJOR surgery that many of us undergo because it is medically necessary. Some people, I've come to realize, just believe that it must not be that serious because A) it's elective and they associate it with " merely " having plastic/cosmetic surgery. You can try to educate some people about the realities of the surgery, and some will be open-minded -- but be prepared, some people just don't (or can't, or won't) hear what you're saying. I found that out the hard way with a few people who I expected to be more sympathetic or supportive following my surgery, and they just didn't get why things were so hard because after all, I " just " got my jaw worked on. It's definitey frustrating, but seems to go with the territory at times. I found that if I could tell myself that it was *their* problem and not mine, sometimes that helped.
