Guest guest
Amber- I know it's hard. It seems like you're going nowhere, and that all the treatment that has already been done has been for nothing- a complete waste of time. I went through this just a couple of months ago. Just try to keep your chin up. It will get better! I know it's hard to just leave the cast off, because it seems like you're stopping his treatment, but the truth is he wasn't being treated properly to begin with. The only thing I can say is to enjoy being with him without casts on for now. Let him play in the tub!! You will be amazed at how quickly his feet will be treated when treated properly. Lucas' were corrected by Dr. Ponseti in only 3 weeks. When I look back at how long other doctors tried (12 mos!!) it seems like nothing! He is now fully corrected and in his /Ponseti brace. If you ever need to talk or vent, you can email me. We've all been there before and you've just got to get it out and then go on (at least, that's how I am). Good luck to you, and I hope your insurance will let you go see Dr. Dobbs! You might want to call them yourself and see what they say, while Dr. Dobb's office checks into it from their end. Guest guest
Amber- The beauty of Shriners is that all care up until the age of 18 is free!! Free!! ie insurance/smurance. Now about the whole-LA or St Louis one- I know the shreveport one would do your son more harm than good--so make sure that you let them know you want to see the best and if Dr Dobbs has to interfere-have him!! Take care, kathleen > > Is there anyone in this group that lives in Mississippi that is goin up > to St. Louis to the Shrinir Hospital? Guest guest
Amber, Why do you need insurance? Dr. Dobbs is at Shriners there which will care for him for free. I don't think you have anything to worry about with this option other than the drive and lodging, which I don't know if insurance would cover anyway. or maybe it does? At any rate, maybe your church or some relatives would be willing to chip in for gas and lodging to help you out? You would only have to stay there one night, and drive back the next day, if that. Or drive the night before and stay over for an am appointment and then go home (more likely). Go back a week later and do again. It's likely that you'd only need to do this 2 or 3 times if he only needs a couple of casts. Then it's done, and you go back much less often while he wears the brace. Is there anything as far as lodging or transportation that you need help with finding? What kind of walls are you running into with this? How can we help? hang in there, glad to hear you got those horrible casts off. Just enjoy him and rest assured that Dr. Dobbs will fix him up in no time. Promise! Guest guest
Insurance won't matter at Shriners! You don't have to wait for your insurance or approval from your Insurance co., Shrine will cover the costs of treatment. s. Guest guest
I just want to chime in here that if the drive every week is impossible (for whatever reasons) Amber could stay in St. Louis for the length of the treatment at the Mc Houses dirt cheap. s. Guest guest
Sorry I forgot to mention this previously regarding transportation to St. Louis - the lady in SL I spoke with said Wings of Hope would fly us back and forth from Oklahoma. The St. Louis people understand the Shreveport people can't do Ponseti treatments and really push to get parents to St. Louis when necessary, pulling strings and getting you there! s. Guest guest
Amber, First of all... Hugs to you and to . You are doing an amazing job of trying to get him the best possible care for his sweet little feet. Things are going to work out just fine. Before you know it, you'll be chasing him around the grocery store as he runs away from you on his perfect feet! The wonderful, amazing thing about all of the Shriner's hospitals is that they provide all treatment absolutely free of charge. X-rays, shoes, braces, casting materials, you don't pay for a single thing. You will never see a bill from them; they don't even have a billing department. If they ask you whether you have insurance, it's because they like to keep track of these kinds of things for statistics. My son is treated at a Shriner's hospital in California. Until recently, our insurance didn't even know he had clubfoot--and he's 2 and a half years old. As you already know, though, all clubfoot treatment is not equal and you need to make sure that you are seeing a doctor who really and truly is following the Ponseti method. The doctors at the Shriner's in Shreveport, unfortunately, are not getting good results. However, Dr Dobbs at the Shriner's in St Louis is. If you insist that you want to see him and only him, it will happen. If you run into resistance from anyone, let us know. We can direct you to folks who can pull strings. From transportation to lodging, they've got people there who can help you out. Take a deep breath and relax and enjoy 's feet with no casts on. We hope for all the best for him and we're here to help you get just that. Guest guest
Amber The Shriner in St. Louis is free for your child. I was thinking the same thing how I'm going to get to St. Louis so I was thinking the same thing going to Shreveport but they told me it could be several months before we would get in down there. So I started calling St. Louis talk to I think her name was Gail in Family Services she helped me get a flight free of charge flying with Wings Of Hope, then a Shriner will pick me up take me to the Haven House which she told me the Temple is going to pay my stay while I'm there, so come find out I don't have to pay for nothing. I leave out on March 12th come home on March 14th. Have any more questions let me know.
