Guest guest
Bev, My iron slowly came down with each set of labs. My doctor put me on Foltrin, I got all the bad side effects and no improvement. My ferritin kept dropping then one of my H's started dropping. That's when I was sent for my first iron infusion. Seems to me I was about 18 months postop. Went on a once a year regime with them till my brachioplasty and thighplasty. Lost quite a bit of blood with that and my levels bottomed out. Got protein malnutrition, ferritin got to 6 with my H & H at 9 and 28. That got me 3 iron infusions though thankfully no blood transfusions. My hematologist says that she will keep a closer eye on my now because it took weeks to get my levels back up to norms. I know that when I crave salt (pumpkin seeds especially) that means that I need iron. It's my trigger. So when I get that craving I call, she tests and sure enough...time for an infusion!! About your low iron How far out from WLS are those of you who are having low iron counts? Did all of you end up with shots/infusion to get the counts back up? Very curious about this... also did the low counts begin before or after any reconstructive/plastic surgeries? Very curious about this... also did the low counts begin before or after any reconstructive/plastic surgeries?<<< I was one year out on May 29. My ferritin has only been 18 before surgery and my H & H in the low end of the range. Watched my ferritin drop starting at 6 months, H & H still low. I increased my iron pills but at one year, my ferritin was 9, H & H still in low/very low range. So my surgeon started me on a series of iron injections - one a week for 8 weeks. At 7 weeks I will have more labs and will either have another 8 week series of injections if levels improve or may have to go to iv iron. I am menopausal, but I have always struggled with low iron. Guest guest
Mine were okay for 5 years. Now on Niferex liquid 3 times daily. Will see this Thursday if it works. My hematologist does one big infusion, called " Infed " or 8 smaller infusions called " Ferrlicet. " He says the 8 are safer. Iron was always okay before plastics.....they always test for HIV and do a CBC, or complete blood count. in Austin RNY April 1998 About your low iron > How far out from WLS are those of you who are having low iron counts?
