Eileen,

I can't help much with the thirst issue, but I can speak from personal

experience with regard to the menstrual and iron issues. I am having the same

problem. Do not wait too long trying to resolve the period problem. My personal

opinion is that we are not absorbing the hormones from the bc pills. There are

other options out there for this. My new gyn showed me a small ring that

gets inserted onto the vagina....a way to get the birth control hormones without

depending upon the digestive system. This bleeding problem is probably

causing the iron problem.....or the other way around. A doc told me that iron

deficiency can cause menstrual irregularity(in either direction....periods too

often....or periods not showing up). More than likely though...your bleeding is

draining your iron supply.

I have opted for a procedure called " endometrial ablation " . This is

appropriate for me because I have no plans for another pregnancy(my kids are 17

& 19)

yrs old now. I had my tubes tied years ago.

Keep taking iron supplements and get your blood work done regularly. I hope

all turns out well for you.

Don't know about the Iron and stuff, but about the thirst issue. How long

has it been since you had your sugars tested? I mean that thirst

thing....that sets off alarms. And wasn't it on this list that someone said

they lost all their weight only to find out they were a type 1 diabetic? Or

did I read that wrong.

Also, I am absolutely emergengently thirsty constantly. I drink

close to a gallon of water and milk....okay and 2 cups of coffee per

day. The thirst issue is unbelievable. I can't even communicate how

horrible it is. I can drink a liter of water in 40 minutes and have

no relief. I am not diabetic. Any ideas?

Otherwise I am great. I walk everywhere...I started bike riding 5

months ago which I haven't done in 20 years. I am smaller now than I

was as a freshman in highschool. My back problems are for the most

part resolved and I no longer have sleep apnea. This is the best

thing I have ever done for myself.

I would appreciate any help and advice you ladies and gentlemen can

give me. My doctor is relatively confused about the whole process.

Thanks,

Eileen

Debbie,

That may have been me talking about my son. He had his surgery 21

months ago and is a Type I who wears a pump now. Pre surgery he had

NO diabetic indications. At 9 mo out we almost lost him because the

docs said that you just can't lose 150 lbs and become diabetic.

Well, I am here to say that you can if your body turns on the

pancreas (sp?) and kills it. Especially when the docs just won't

believe what the test are telling them. Anyhow, it is just a

warning to anyone who may go into ketosis, begin RAPID wt loss with

no reason, and have alot of thirst and need to pee. Also, those in

ketosis will have a sweet/fruity smell about them.

As far as the thirst, if you are in ketosis because you are eating

mainly protein, it does not mean that you are diabetic. With

ketosis comes thirst. This may be what is going on here, but be

safe rather than sorry! Check it out! I almost lost something so

precious because no one thought it was possible to become diabetic

post surgery. I am not a doc...just been there and almost lost a

son.

Fay,

He had MANY docs stumped. It wasn't blamed on his WLS, just

that " anyone " who had lost 150 lbs should not become diabetic. WLS

or not. Our PCP made lots of calls to other docs, including his WLS

surgeon, and they were all scratching their collective heads. At

least until they brought in the endo doc. She knew right away what

had happened!

Type I is often thought to be just for children...that you are born

with it. That is part of the reason that they do not look for it to

happen in older folks. Our endo says that it can happen to anyone

at any time. That for some reason the body just turns on the

pancreas and kills it or part of it. Does not have to run in the

family. Can be brought on by a virus or other stress to our body

(like surgery) or for no reason at all. More research is needed.

Thank you for your concern and anger! Blaming something on obesity

and/or our surgery angers me as well. Wish more docs would look for

the cause rather than assume and treat symptoms.
