Hi ,

I used to live in Northern Virginia. I know that is far from the Virginia

Beach area. At this time, I am unaware of any docs in your area. In fact, I

even went all the way to Baltimore because there isn't anyone in the DC area

either. Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore is excellent and is listed on Ponseti's

list of qualified physicians in this method. Peolpe come from PA, DE, NJ. NY,

VA & MD just to see him. It doesn't necessarily mean there isn't a qualified

doctor closer to you. I just don't know of one, yet. Sorry.

If you want to read more about Dr. Herzenberg, you can go to:

http://www.lifebridgehealth.org You want to read about the Rubin Institute for

Advanced Orthopaedics at Sinai Hospital.

Good luck on your search.

Greetings! I'm new to this site and very new to learning about clubfeet. Our

grand daughter has already been diagnosed with bilateral club feet, in utero,

with an April '06 delivery. I'm doing all I can to begin sifting thru the

research

to hopefully help our son and daughter in law out when this becomes their

reality. I've done a fair amount of research of the Ponsetti method. I'd like

to

learn more about the French Physiotherapy Method. But my real question is:

does anyone know of a good pediatric orthopeodist in the Virginia Beach,

Virginia area who is knowledgable in these treatments? Any response is

appreciated. Many thanks,

Hi, ,

Congrats on your baby granddaughter on the way!

Another option, the other direction, is Dr. Frick, in Charlotte, NC.

I know that's not all that close to you either, but he is skilled and

experienced:

Frick, M.D.

5939 Cabell View Ct.

Charlotte, NC 28232-3286

Tel:

I'm not sure if many centers are using the French Physio method at

this point. Within the last couple of years, the Ponseti method has

been almost universally acknowledged as the way to go.. the most

straightforward, easiest on the kids and the parents, with the best

long term results. Here is an abstract of a recent study done on the

French method results at one center.. 49 percent needed major

surgery. With the Ponseti method, success is over 90 percent.

Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics, Jan/Feb 2005 25(1):98-102.

Nonoperative clubfoot treatment using the French physical therapy

method.

s BS, ston CE, H.

Texas ish Rite Hospital for Children, Dallas, Texas, USA.

Ninety-eight patients (142 clubfeet) treated nonoperatively by the

French physical therapy method were reviewed to determine the

effectiveness of this technique. All were 3 months old or less when

treatment began and were rated for initial clubfoot severity using

the Dimeglio scale (moderate, severe, very severe). Follow-up

averaged 35 months (range 20-62 months). Forty-two percent of the

feet needed no surgery to achieve a plantigrade position, 9% needed

heelcord tenotomies, 29% needed posterior releases, and 20% needed

comprehensive posteromedial releases. The Dimeglio scale was

prognostic for outcomes, with moderate feet having the best results

and very severe feet having the worst results. The French physical

therapy method significantly reduced the need for operative

intervention at the authors' institution.

Here are some key links for info:

http://www.global-help.org/publications/cf-english.pdf

http://www.vh.org/pediatric/patient/orthopaedics/clubfeet/index.html

Also check out these parent (or grandparent =) checklists to help

find a doctor:

http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil/id13.html

http://www.clubfoot.co.za/checklist.htm

With the growing use of the method, more doctors are saying they are

using it, without that necessarily being the case. It's up to the

parents to figure out what they are getting.

Hope this helps.. Good luck!

and Claire

Hi ! Good for you to start research early!

My name is ee. I have two sons, both born with bilateral club feet, and I

have a 3rd son due March 1st also with bilateral club feet.

I would urge the Ponseti Method.

The French Method from what I know about it doesn't boast as high of a success

rate as the Ponseti. It's also known to take a LOT of time and work with dr.

visits lasting way longer than the Ponseti Method. I don't remember all the

specifics but all in all the summary is you get better results with a Ponseti

treatment in much shorter amount of time.

There is a document in our files/links sections with a list of questions parents

should ask doctors when seeking the Ponseti treatment that has been really

helpful to others in choosing the right doctor. I recommend you read that and

print it for your children also.

If there is not a dr. in your immediate neighborhood, I would urge you to travel

to a good doctor. A penny saved on poor local care adds up to a boat load of

money spent trying to fix that dr's mistakes later on with further treatments

and/or surgery. It's really just best to take the bull by the horns and go

where ever you need to go to get the right treatment first.

Long story short though, if treated properly this is a very short-term birth

defect and you can expect perfect feet at the end of it in nearly 100% of the

cases.

any questions you have about the process please feel free to ask away here, OK?

Merry Christmas,

s.
