same here, zero health issues, and I could eat anything at any time and not have a stomach ache.... Antibiotics changed all that real quick!-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 7 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 5 pills a dayTo: BTVC-SCD From: dawntasher@...Date: Sat, 13 Mar 2010 15:38:49 +0000Subject: Re: Sorta OT: Antibiotics caused UC.

Oh, yes there is. Antibiotics is what screwed me up, I had absolutely no health issues before them, and although I have not been diagnosed because I completely gave up on doctors, I suspect I have a mild case of crohns.

You just reminded me that I was craving sugars all the time too. Weird... I was real into health food, then decided that reeses peanut butter cups were too good to pass up. So I was eating 4 or 5 packs a day at the time. I thought since I was so healthy for so long I had the "right" to eat like a pig for a little bit and feel good doing it. Yep. Same with me. I was on them for sinus infections all the time when I was a kid, then started having painful constipation when I turned 12 - same time I got my period - I still think reproductive organ stress is linked since the organs are right next to each other and I always get worse on my period. But I never had UC until 6 rounds of pretty strong antibiotics and 2 rounds of antifungals in an 8 month period. Every time I would bloat up and get really distended and constipated (for days on end), but doctors told would never ever address that issue - like it wasn't actually happening. My naturopath (found her in Jan after 6 months of UC), said in most of her cases there is a link to antibiotic use. I started craving high sugar, refined and high carb foods during the last couple months of antibiotics (those bacteria were really getting to me!), and gave into it after years of dairy free/wheat free/processed food free (mostly) dieting. Then the UC came. Looking back it was totally avoidable, which pisses me off to be honest...after reading all the literature I can and asking lost of questions here, I understand just how complex this world of micro-organic warfare really is. And that right now my defenses are down, from prednisone and from ulceration, lack of good bacterias etc. I have noticed a huge difference on the diet but still flair up - I think it will take a lot of time, like people have said. I was getting sick for a long time. There is a lot of damage. Sometimes meds are still necessary because of the extent of the damage, but eating these easy-to-digest-for-me foods really really helps.

Just my 2-cents plus a rant! :) More drops in the bucket of antibiotic-related (bacteria related) causes.

I was on antibiotics for acne for five years; a different antibiotic each year. I'm just glad I never went on Accutane. That would have been the icing on the cake.--ulie

Wow, does this ever sound familiar. I was on a fairly high dose of tetracycline for just over two years to treat serious, scarring acne. A little while after stopping the antibiotics, I went from being able to eat anything, anytime, to a host of digestive ailments -- all of which people on this group will recognize all too well!

And yes, I started craving sugar and starchy things of all kinds. Frightening to think now that all those times when I was so nauseated I could barely eat, my food choices (and cravings) may have just been worsening and prolonging the problem.
