I've read that babies need from 12 - 15 hours of sleep a day. Sounds

like he's getting enough sleep, he's just getting it all at once!

backround first, Karter was recasted 4 times, last time by Dr.

Ponseti, switched to mitchells about a week and a half ago after

several problems with Markells, so Karter 18 months old and only been

walking for a little over a month, has decided that in these new

shoes he can stand and hop. It is just the cutest thing, he hops

then holds his arms straight out to balance himself. Tried to get it

on film, but everytime I get the cam, he won't do it. He can stand

alone with these shoes so much better that he will just stand up in

the middle of the floor and start dancing when he hears music.

doesn't need to take a nap anymore, this makes him very grumpy by

5pm. We put him to bed around 5:30 and he sleeps until 7:30 am.

which is good for his shoe hours, but we don't get home until 4pm and

we feed him and then he is ready for bed. He will get his shoes,

blanket and go stand by his crib until we put him in. We have talked

to his daycare and she says somedays he will sleep for about 20

mins. So my question is he getting enough sleep? Is this just

something he is going thru right now and will start to take a nap

again or are we done with the naps for good? My daughter took a nap

everyday until she was 4 and it was always good mommy time.

My philosophy is that as long as the kids aren't cranky during their time awake,

then they are getting enough sleep. It sounds like he is getting great

nighttime sleep. My second and third kids gave up naps way too early, too.

They still needed them, but decided that yelling and crying for an hour was

better than taking a nap. LOL

It cuts down on your evening time to spend with him awake but I'd say he's

getting enough. However, if you kept him awake later at night he might go back

to napping in the day so you have more evening hours to enjoy playing with him.

Hi Tabitha,

I am glad that he is doing so well in the s! Everyone seems to love

those shoes. I don't know if you've read the Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy

Child book by Dr. Marc Weissbluth but I have found it very informative.

At any rate I remember it saying that some babies outgrow naps at about 18

months. I think if the daycare is putting him down for a nap and he isn't

sleeping very long, he may be at that point already. At the very least, it

is good for him to have a little " down time " even if that doesn't always

translate into a nap.

I think it's great that he sleeps so long at night time! That is perfect for

the shoe hours, isn't it? My 18 month old still naps but only for about

1.5hrs. He definitely doesn't sleep as long as Karter at night though.

HTH,

Halley
