I was pretty sure I had apnea, because I would wake up coughing sometimes, never felt really rested, and had to sleep on my stomach to breathe. When I had my surgery, they didn't test me, and when I was recovering Dr. Tanaka told me they had discovered apnea during surgery. He said they didn't test for it, because it was pretty much assumed that anyone ovdr 300 pounds lying on their backs would display symptoms of apnea during surgery, so they just prepared for it in every case. The anethesiologist who works with them has a great deal of experience with MO patients and apnea, so he's always expecting it in bariatric surgeries, particularly with the super MO. It's interesting, nearly everyone I talk to who is overweight has the same complaint about sleep -- snoring too loud, intermittent bouts of not breathing, waking up coughing to get a breath -- I imagine it's a very small portion of the MO population who DON'T have apnea problems. But I don't know this, it's just based on my observations. ~~ Lyn G
