When I went for my consult, Dee talked about practicing with an

incentive spirometer, a device that measures the rate of flow and

volume of air as you inhale and inflate your lungs fully. I had one

and played around with it at home every day. It went to a maximum of

2500 ccm. and I quickly passed that level. When I got to the room,

the nurse brought another spirometer. This time it was 4000 ccm. I

told the nurse I knew how to use it. She asked if I could go up to

1500 ccm. She was amazed that I hit 3250 ccm. the first time. I

actually reached 4,000 ccm several times.

The reason that this is important is that it keeps your lung capacity

up. One gentleman was admitted post op for pneumonia while I was

there. I assume that he hadn't used his spirometer. It also keeps

your lungs from collapsing. Another thing that I noticed was that

when I was waking up from the anesthesia, my lungs were clear and

easy to fill. I recommend the use of the incentive spirometer very

highly!

More later . . .
