Guest guest
You're right that the band would have some open space in it to begin with, but (and again, this is from my experience with DOC) at some point the head should grow into that space and it would need to be opened some more. It's kind of a controlled area, they don't just leave it comepletely open, I would think it would be too loose. So they open it up a little at a time. My son didn't have anything scraped out until week 4. Our therapist just measures the circumference of his head to chart his growth from adjustment to adjustment, and then touches and feels around at the openings of the band to see where it might be getting tight and how it fits. He also compares his head to his beginning " headsicle " (his head mold on a stick) so he can see his progress. So ' red spots are occurring more where his holding points would be? (Front and sides, rather than the open parts in the back?) Hmmm. I don't know. Obviously red spots aren't good in general, but I would think they should generally be happening more in the flat spot area as the head grows into the shape of the open space of the helmet. Not at the holding points (if that is what's happening). My son did had a minor red spot dead center of his forehead bulge the first week (and like you said, I felt good about it because it told me he was getting the pressure in the spot where he needed it most), and they did do a minor scraping (I couldn't even see it) and he never got it again. I just assumed it was because his head got used to being held there and adapted to that foam on skin contact. I really hope someone else will respond with comparable experience with Hanger. I'm just not sure what to tell you. Has the ortho offered any explanations?
