Guest guest
Kathleen, You must have had a great evaluation and ed team. is 14 months, and his one year review is in March. We just had him evaluated for speech and he only gets it twice a month. He has no verbal communication including babbling and no nonverbal other than crying or screeching. Just wanted to let you know how lucky you are! How have you liked your smo's by the way? 's doctor recommended them today, but we go back in April to see if he still needs them and to get measured if he does. I was a little hestitant only because he has made such strides in the last 2 weeks, but I figure it is worth a try. Our PT said First Steps would cover them. Just wanted your thoughts on them. Have you seen any negativity toward his clubfeet? 11/19/04 leenernd wrote: Hi All- This one kind of goes back to an OT about speech delay. Our son david is in the First Steps program in Indiana and has been for a year now. He just had his one year evaluation where they redetermine his eligibilty. He was observed by a speech and language pathologist (I had a speech delay and since it's free, I figured it didn't hurt) and a physical therapist. Since he isn't walking on his own, obviously he is still behind in his gross motor skills. It did surprise us a little to find out he is slightly delayed in speech. The way the SLP explained it is for the first 18months-the brain is busy figuring out how the body works, etc. and once it has that figured out, it begins working on the speech/communication. is at the 24 month range for non-verbal communication, however, for verbal he is at 12 month old. He is now eligible for speech therapy once a week. The SLP says walking/talking tend to go hand in hand which makes sense especially when she explained the whole brain being focused on certain tasks. I wanted to share this with the parents who think there child may have a speech delay-it doesn't hurt to have your child evaluated and with the Early INtervention team-they are soooo wonderful and fun to work. We had the same PT do this year's eval as the initial one last year and she couldn't believe how well david was doing and what a handsome little guy he has grown up to be. On a more exciting note, my little stinker is sneakily walking on his own. He won't walk to us when we ask but the minute we turn our backs on him, he will be taking 6 or 7 steps towards something. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, and thanks for sharing this information. I had a EI meeting last week to see if we qualified to have my daughter checked out. She did qualify and we are waiting to get an appointment to have her evaluated. I'm glad we are having her checked out. Thanks to every one who encouraged me to do it. Glad to hear your son if doing so great! and leenernd wrote: Hi All- This one kind of goes back to an OT about speech delay. He is now eligible for speech therapy once a week. The SLP says walking/talking tend to go hand in hand which makes sense especially when she explained the whole brain being focused on certain tasks. Guest guest
Thanks - The ed team was really funny as they remembered my husband from last year as the only father ever who wanted their kid to qualify for services. IT gave us all a good laugh. Best wishes and keep us informed! Keep in mind too-if she doesn't qualify through EI but is " delayed " -here in IN you have to be at 20% delay-david is at 21%- you can seek therapy outside the network-you would just have to pay for it! hth, kathleen > Hi All- > This one kind of goes back to an OT about speech delay.
