Don't forget about 30% of our mentally ill and retarded are in our prisons. You gotta wonder. Jeneane, Some good points in your letter but I stick by my zero tolerance statement. I don't mean kicking two kids out of daycare for fighting over a toy but if a child (or two) consistently can't get it together at daycare without hurting other kids, yes, an alternate arrangement needs to be found, even that early. And public school kids who hurt other kids need homebound education (yes, I am for services for them) *before* it becomes a matter of " detention center education. " I believe there *is* a relationship between tolerating " small doses " of aggression in day care and the situation at Columbine. A three-yr-old who is being hit every day does not view the hitting from an adult perspective. It is terrifying. And, just to clarify, I think you were saying that 30% of our prison population has neurological problems, *not* that 30% of the kids with neurological problems (a much higher percentage of our population) wind up in prison. Right? Because I would need proof if you were claiming the second statistic was true. Love, M.
