Guest guest
I seriously think you should get going on a referral to an orthotist. For one thing, 14mm is a lot, and I don't think it could correct by repo alone. We started repo at 4 months and saw just a bit of improvement over the next two months, at which point our son was at 11mm. I'd guess he started at 13 or 14 at most. The other thing is that while repo may have helped the asymmetry, I was pretty sure that it made our son's brachy worse. A helmet would not do that. No one seems to know why peds are so laissez faire about this. Good luck! > > Brayden had his 4 month appointment today and his Ped. thinks his head will correct on its own. His is 14mm off. The Dr. said with repositioning (which we have been doing) and doing tummy time more and the sleep surve mattress, his head will round out. Did your ped. tell you the same thing? He said he'll check his head again at his 6 month appointment. >
Guest guest
Hi, At 3 months I noticed my daughter's head was flat and took her to the ped they suggested repositioning but that I should also take her to a Specialist. They suggested we go to a Neurosurgeon. I had heard from numerous friends that it is very hard to get an appointment with the Neurosurgeons. I had to wait over a month for one and close to two for an appointment with another. My advice would be call and make the appointment you can always cancel if is head improves. Good Luck, Kara > > Brayden had his 4 month appointment today and his Ped. thinks his head will correct on its own. His is 14mm off. Guest guest
Two peds told us it would round out so we didn't do anything, but at 16 months old, his head was still really flat and ended up measuring 15 mm at that point. So we banded late and didn't get as much correction as we should have, had someone advised us earlier to go ahead with it. I would do as someone else suggested and make an appointment with a specialist and continue repo in the meantime. We had to wait 2 months for an appointment when we had to see a pediatric neurosurgeon to rule out cranio (he also told us it would round out). When we finally got around to banding, we didn't have to wait long for an appointment with a pediatric craniofacial surgeon, cause he held a " head clinic " every Tuesday, which was great. But I'm sure that's not the case everywhere. I would just start looking into appointments and doctor options if you feel it will be necessary since it can take some time to jump through all the hoops. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi , We noticed Luke's add head shape early on (cramped uterus space, long time in birth canal). I asked his ped at every appointment from the beginning and he told us it would round out. When I asked about it at his 4 month appointment, his ped had an odd reaction to the shape of his head, but he still said it would round out on it's own and to wait till our next appointment (his 6 month appt.) to see how it is shaping and talk about what to do if it hadn't shown improvement...but his reaction made me wonder and I went home and started to investigate more about what to do. After a week, I went to see the ped again with all my info and he agreed that Luke should be banded. At 5 months, Luke was banded with severe brachy (97.5% CI and mild plagio 6.6mm). We just went to see his ortho again to get an adjustment and he told us that Luke will be done with his helmet by his next scan, 6/10....meaning, he will be out of his helmet within 2 months instead of the projected 3-4 months. My point is, listen to what your gut is telling you. I knew my son was a fast grower (has been in the 95% of every chart), so I wanted to get him banded as soon as possible to catch his major growth spurts. I would make a cutoff date to make a decision like everyone has advised and repo as much as possible. Take pix to make comparisons. I got the Boppy noggin' nest for his changing table and stroller to use before he got his band. Also, if you have access to a pool, it does help with strengthening your baby's neck muscles instead of having them struggle at tummy time. Good Luck. Luke, 6 months, 2 weeks, severe brachy, mild plagio STARband almost 7 weeks NYC > > Brayden had his 4 month appointment today and his Ped. thinks his head will correct on its own. His is 14mm off. Guest guest
I wish at 4 months i had insisted on a second opinion from a neurologist or some one else. the longer they leave it the longer it takes to fix. We waited and did the positional therapy. But we still had to get the helmet at 6 months. Perhaps you could ask fro them to refer you to a physical therapist, i think if maybe i had have known some good stretches and positions for my son the positional therapy may have worked but it's very hard to do successfully with the short amount of instructions the ped gives you. I really wish i had have been a better advocate for my son months ago. > > Brayden had his 4 month appointment today and his Ped. thinks his head will correct on its own. His is 14mm off.
