Guest guest
My son started wearing his helmet full time 3 days ago. One of his cheeks where the helmet covers it has been red, tonight after his bath i noticed it was redder than usual and has a raised rash look to it, he also has pimply looking bumps on his forhead and crown. It seems to be bothering him if i touch it and he keeps shaking his head i think it is itchy. Also even after washing his hair his head still smells like a dirty shoe. Does any one have any suggestions or advice i would be very grateful for either as the office is closed until Monday.
Guest guest
My son had the same issues and still gets the rash once in a while. I think it's heat rash. For the hour he has the band off (I do 15 min. in the morning, 15 in the afternoon and then 30 at night for his tubby) I put on this lotion called TriDerma Baby Extreme Itch & Dryness (You can buy it at BRU, kind of expensive ($15), but you can send away for a $2 rebate with a coupon inside the box and the cream is great for everything skin related) Let it completely dry before you put the band back on. You could also use hydrocortisone cream, but use it sparingly and make sure it dries completely because my ped says the band can make the cream absorb too quickly and too soon. As for the dirty shoe smell, I put isopropyl alcohol in a spritzer bottle and spritz the inside of the band, wipe it off with a towel and then spritz water to get rid of the alcohol residue, wipe it down again and then put the band in front of a fan to completely dry. There is varying opinions on whether to use 70 or 91% alcohol...I've tried both and they both worked for me. I shampoo Luke's head with California Baby Tea Tree and Lavender Shampoo and Body Wash. Again, kind of expensive, but it's the only shampoo that I found with tea tree and lavender, two healing essential oils...and it lathers up really well and smells great! Make sure you dress your son lightly in warm temperatures...the less he sweats, the less heat rash. He will sweat less as his body acclimates to wearing the helmet. I wouldn't put the band back on until after the redness on his cheek goes away. Does he sleep on that side? I would go to the ortho on Monday and get it checked out if the redness doesn't go away after 20-30 minutes. He might need an adjustment. Good luck and keep us posted! Guest guest
My daughter just finished her 1st week in the band. Yesterday morning I took off the band and she had a red mark on her forehead. I left the band off for over 3hrs and the redness did not go away. Luckly we had an appt later in the day. When they looked at her red mark thay said it was heat rash. We are to leave the band off till it goes away. Also said to put hydrocoritsone cream 1% on it. Now its the next day and the rash is almost gone!!! So you could try the cream. It work well for us. Will most likely be able to put her band back on today. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Try cortaid 1% on the rash and vasoline on the red raised spots. sounds to me like he needs to have some adjustments made. Do you have the tech numbers, or cell phone. My tech gave me their number and they will meet us up there when they are closed. I also know that the first 2 weeks of them wearing the helmet is the worst with sweating and smell. That should get better. good luck. Keep us posted. Guest guest
My sons' orthotic warned me that this may happen. He told me to buy neosporin for it, he said it works best. > > My son started wearing his helmet full time 3 days ago. Guest guest
...also I forgot. The smell...whew! I lather up a washcloth when giving him his bath with aveeno baby wash and scrub the inside and rinse out. The orthotic doc said it will get rid of the smell and to use rubbing alcohol once daily to keep germs out but it wont rid of the smell. The Aveeno has worked well for us on the smell! > > > From: erinclaire21 <erinclaire21@...> > Subject: Rash and smell > Plagiocephaly > Date: Friday, May 29, 2009, 10:49 PM > > > > > > > > > My son started wearing his helmet full time 3 days ago. Guest guest
Just a quick word of caution, not all orthos approve the use of soap and water to clean the band. Cranial Tech has a strict alcohol only rule, as does Orthomerica (STARBand) and Hanger (both refer to it specically on their website and/or in their brochures). The foam of the band is porous and the water can seap into it, it won't completely dry, and then can leech back out later to irritate the skin. Individual orthos may say otherwise, but according to the manufacturers that make the bands, only rubbing alcohol is allowed because it evaporates quickly. Please please please check with your ortho before using any type of soap and water or non-alcohol form of cleaning. We used really smelly shampoo (Suave for kids in blueberry) to wash my son's hair and it worked to mask the smell. Also, you can set the band out in the sun for a little while and it will help kill the smelly bacteria. Guest guest
hey, i just got my sons band on wednesday...he hasnt got to the point of the 23 hours a day yet, but it has got a littlel smelly. i cant imagine how smelly its gonna be!!! what i did was when he got out of the bath i dried him off, (he doesnt have much hair,) and i rubbed baby powder on his head and a little inside the band. it has worked really really good it smells so good underneath that thing! that is what the instructions said to do, it said the baby powder will absorb some of the sweat, thus helping the smell. they told me to do the hour out of the helmet in 15 min. intervals, which you probably already know about....so clean the helmet with alcohol only and put some baby powder in there and see what that does... also, my son has VER SENSITIVE SKIN... even without the helmet, both my kids did. my daughter grew out of it, hopefully my son does. i normally use aveeno lotion and rub all over his head but the ortho people said no more lotion so i stopped and he is getting raised areas also...it sucks but try the aveeno wash....and i cant stress vaseline enough! put vaseline on the spots on his face and it will make it better.... good luck!!! , mom of: Dayton, STARband for 3 days mom of makenna, 3 years old > > > > > > > > > From: erinclaire21 <erinclaire21@> > > > Subject: Rash and smell > > > Plagiocephaly > > > Date: Friday, May 29, 2009, 10:49 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My son started wearing his helmet full time 3 days ago.
