Guest guest
Janice, our situations sounds almost identical. Our son is 5 and says abut 10 words. He is just getting potty trained and some days does real good and other days there are many accidents. His test scores were in the 200s for the Gluten & almost as high for the Casein. So we are wondering how long to try this diet also. Rhonda
Guest guest
Janice, I am by far an expert, but i have been reading an AWFUL lot about treatments. Have you considered using Nystatin to help with the yeast? Also I am going to begin using a tea called Ojibwa, it is supposed to aid in the healing of the gut. Just a coulpe of ideas for you. Keep up the diet! Sharon C.
Guest guest
, Thanks for the information. LOL I still haven't " figured it out. " Beginning to wonder if I ever will. But this list and the friendly people are a lot of help. Can you tell me where to find the Ojibwa Tea that everyone is talking about? I would like to try it on my son. Also is Kirkman Lab the only place to buy EnZyme Aid and Super Nu Thera? I'm in Central Calif. and all the HFS's i've called don't carry it. Thanks again, Rhonda

Guest guest
Janice and Rhonda, I would definetly make sure, now that you have the diet all figured out, that there are no hidden sources of gluten or casein, before giving up. Do not let your children play with Play-doh, as that can be absorbed through the skin and also they always seem to manage putting little pieces in their mouth. There are recipes for GFCF playdoh if you need just ask the list. aLSO SHAMPOOS, ETC. Another that many seem to forget about is the artificial colors. It is even listed on page 90 in " Special Diets for Special Kids " as an item to be avoided. Think also about cross contamination issues. Is your toaster clean after you toasted NON-GF bread in it? Even crumbs can stop you from being totally GFCF. Do not use the knife you just cut your bread with to cut your childs sandwich. The inside top of a microwave can have splatter from non-gfcf food on it and when you put a GFCF item in to be heated, BINGO - its contaminated. Here is a previous post I kept from A. that mentions some of the things to watch for: Gluten is darn sneaky... I find casein is more obvious and easier to find. But that gluten! Here is what freaked me out early on but I was able to target and eliminate: - Shampoo (I had an oat based shampoo originally) See the GFCFdiet.com list for acceptable ones - Suncreen (I used the most popular PINK kid sunscreen bottle - it has GLUTEN.) I now use Banana Boat for Kids - Play-doh - now replaced with Crayola MODEL MAGIC or the /Karyn Seroussi recipe - Finger paints - I use the Rose Arts Finger paints - they are great - CERTAIN BRANDS of baking powder - I use Miss Robens Corn free baking powder and www.specialfoods.com baking powders - Vinegars - we love balsamic vinegar at our house and Jeff cannot have it so I switched to apple cider vinegar - Rice Dream Rice milk -we all know that story... now I use Pacific Rice Milk - STICKERS AND STAMPS: Yup, they have gluten. We don't let Jeff use those. ALLERGIES AND PHENOLS also are a problem for us. These are the ones we eliminated: - Frontier Vanilla NON Alcohol brand (just mentioned earlier today) - I found Jeff reacted poorly to the plain, alcohol based vanillas from McCormicks. I had to switch to Frontier NON alcohol brand. - Phenols: Bananas, apples, (switched to pears and papaya,) No to peanuts (switched to Almond butter.) No to chocolates (casein!) - COMMON ALLERGIES: Corn and soy. (Try going two weeks without these to see if your child reacts to them.) Take care A jeffs mom (still trying to make sure all is gluten free - even WAX paper!!) I would hang in there awhile longer. You have nothing to lose, the diet isn't hurting your children or causing medical side effects, and if it works the happiness and the gains are wonderful. My son is 16 months GFCF and doing wonderful. I had him allergy tested so I had a list of other items to avoid also so that I wasn't feeding him other offending foods (soy, chocolate, milk, wheat, pork, peanuts , cashews and rice) and I also removed ALL artificial colors, preservatives and artificial flavors. Hope this helps some (LJs mom) on Long Island New York * ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
