Hi Jescie,

I emailed Dr Ponseti about this (ages ago) and he said

barefoot or as close to barefoot is best. That means

if it's too cold for barefoot then shoes with soft

soles are best. (Funny really, when the DBBs have

such hard soles...) :)

Hope this helps,

My daughter does much better in the soft shoes. They are exceptionally great

because they are not one specific size and this covers her size difference very

well. I really like shoes from Pedoodles.com because they have a rubber sole

and thus are OK to wear outdoors. Kelsey is now on her 2nd pair of their

Kitty shoes and they are her favorites.

We have opted to have her time out of the 's be while she is

there. I've read that soft shoes or 'crib shoes' are the best for

babies to wear, but does anyone know if it's different for babies with

clubfeet? It seems that a hard-soled shoe might be better for keeping

their foot straight. Any thoughts/experience is appreciated.

Thank you,

Jescie,

There's no consensus as to what the best shoes are for CF children. Dr

Ponseti has been quoted as saying to use a flexible, but supportive shoe. Other

parents report that their doctors have told them that as close to barefoot as

much as possible is best. I'd avoid heavy, clunky, hard-soled shoes which are

likely to interfere in the foot's development. Otherwise you are probably fine

either way.

Until your daughter is walking, she shouldn't need anything with very much

support. Soft-soled moccassin type shoes (like Robeez or similar brands) will

keep her socks clean and give her some traction for standing on. Once my son

(who LOVES shoes) was standing alot and walking, I noticed that he prefers a

shoe with little to no arch support but some ankle support. There are lots of

options out there for adorable shoes for your daughter--her clubfoot doesn't

really make a difference.

We love Zutano's booties for babies (good up to the point when

they start walking). They are made in both fleece & cotton varieties.

Our girls have never managed to take them off (unlike other brands

we've tried). You can purchase them online at babycenter.com

and redballoon.com.
