Guest guest
I have been researching various types of weight loss surgery for a long time and think that I have decided on DS but I have a couple of questions that I need answered and was hoping that you could help.My biggest concern is diarehha,my husband an I go out a lot to restaurants and stuff and I was curious if there is anything that you can do to prevent it and if its something that everyone gets? Is it a everyday thing? Most of what ive read was information packs and not from real people that have had surgery and that stuff is based on statistics so I would rather ask here. Also I have read that weight loss is slower with this type of surgery, what is the average weight loss per month? I have about 100 pounds to lose so im hoping for a goal of a year in a half at the longest. And what types of foods can you not eat with this ? I know that you dont get dumping with this surgery which is great because that sounds like one pain that I dont want to have. Any info would be appericated! Guest guest
<<My biggest concern is diarehha>>> Hi Tara--For me, I had diarrhea for the first 3 weeks. I was told this was mainly due to the anesthesia and the fact that most of my diet was liquid. Once I started eating more and taking my dialy vitamin, my bm's changed, firmed up(sorry to be so graphic.) There are thousands of people who have had the DS and work. It's not a problem for most. There are exceptions to every rule. I have found that it is absolutely controllable with what I eat. It's not a problem in my life at all. <<<Also I have read that weight loss is slower with this type of surgery>>> I haven't seen any studies on this. For me, it wasn't how fast I lost, but that I keep it off. I knew too many people who had other surgeryies and after 2 or 3 years, gained it all back. That was my fear. I wanted the surgery with the best chance to keep the weight off. <<<And what types of foods can you not eat with this>>> For me, this went in phases. What bothered me at first, doesn't bother me now. Sometimes something will bother me, sometimes it won't. At almost 2 years postop, watermelon is something I stay away from--goes right through me. Other than that, I eat EVERYTHING and am satisfied with EVERY meal. No " head hunger " , no feeling deprived, no dieting, no " being careful " --- They tell me this is a tool...but to me... it really was a cure. I guess there's screwdrivers, and then there's power drills! I made the right choice! :>) All the best to you.. heidi Open DS, Oct 1999, Dr. Anthone http://www.mywls.com
Guest guest
Tara, I just adressed the diarrhea thing in my post to Bev. I, too, had 100 lbs to lose. It's been 4 months and I've lost 58 lbs. I never heard that weight loss was slower with the DS. In fact, overall you can expect to loss 80-95% total excess weight as opposed to the RNY's 65-75%.
