We finally had our appointment with Dr.Colburn

today. We appreciated that he took time to explain

things and were relieved to find that he found her

foot could be given a try at this age. She started

out with mild clubfoot I guess which is probably

why it was not detected this far.

Anyway, she has the first long cast on. She is

taking it all stoically and sort of believes us when

we all indicated to her that the cast is the

coolest thing. I was wondering about one thing

though and have just e-mailed Dr.Colburn about it.

Wanted to get mom's perceptions from here too.

I thought that the cast should look pretty straight

upto the foot and then just the foot will turn outward

for correction. Her cast looks as though the whole

leg is turned outward with the foot going a litle bit more.

Maybe I am just imnagining things and just the weight of

the cast acting to move the whole leg to the out.

Wanted to know if anyone has seen/thought of the

long casts this way?

She is not complaining so far and seems OK with the Cast.

But then it has only been a few hours. She has plaster

cast reinforced with fiberglass and a liitle shoes

for the cast that Dr.Colburn gave in case she tries

to walk on smooth surfaces!

Lalitha,

have you seen the pictures of casting in the following sites? it

might help.

http://www.vh.org/pediatric/patient/orthopaedics/clubfeet/index.html

(check out Cotton's website in Testimonials)

Also this one:

Sometimes the casts can indeed look very strange.

my daughter had casting done in Iowa at 6 months old, after previous

unsuccessful treatment, and a couple were extremely turned out. In

one, her foot was almost pointing backwards it was so far rotated.

Dr. Ponseti said it had to be done that way because of something

related to her previous treatment .. amazingly it didn't seem

uncomfortable for her. but looked extreme!

So glad you were able to see Dr. Colburn.. and that Grace is doing

well with it. How long will she wear it? Did he say how many he

expects she'll need? Has he talked to you about the FAB?
