In 1992, DW and I visited Portugal. In the east central part there is a town (I cannot recall the name) with a chapel the walls of which are lined with (or made from?) skeletal bones of, as I recall, 5000 people--the " Ossiary Chapel. " It was built by a priest centuries ago to demonstrate the frailty (and futility) of life. Quite a sight: skulls, arm and leg bones, etc., floor-to-ceiling. In the hall, just before entering, there were about a score of long braids of hair hanging from hooks that would normally hold cloaks or hats. We were told that young women had cut off their braids as offerings just before their weddings. Not exactly Ripley material, but one never forgets the visit. --Steve --
