Hi my name is and I just joined this group yesterday so I am a little unsure of how it works.. I have an 8 month old son Gavin who was diagnosed with plagiocephly around 3 months. The doctors assured us it would fix itself once he started sitting up, rolling etc...well it didn't. Around 5 months I asked to see a specialist at Dornbecker Children's hospital in Portland, Oregon. The specialist said if she were me should would wait another 6 weeks to see if it improved on its own. So we left and I began thinking if I wanted anything done about this I was going to have to take charge. It was almost like they didn't want to hassle with it. I called back and told them I was going ahead with the helmet. So we made a appointment for the scan at Hanger. We had the scan done on a Friday and the helmet was supposed to be done in 2 weeks, so when 2 and ½ weeks went by and I hadn't heard anything I decided to call. The receptionist told he that the she didn't know what was going on with the helmet and she would have to call me back. So the next day she called to tell me that they were holding off to hear if the insurance was going to cover the helmet. I was so angry, at the initial scan I told the man that I was paying for the helmet wether the insurance covered it or not! I feel like since I am a younger mother they maybe thought I wouldn't pay for it or something. So almost 3 weeks later they were just sending the scan to have the helmet made. Last Friday more than a month after the first appointment we got the call that the helmet was finally in. Gavin was fitted and he made a few adjustments but he seemed to tolerate it fairly well, he even fell asleep with it on in the car on the ride home. So today is day 6 and he just slept with the helmet on all night for the first time, he did ok, only waking once. I am having a way harder time than I think he is. I feel awful when he gets really upset and I can tell he is frustrated with this giant plastic thing on his head. I hate not being able to kiss his head and snuggle with him without fear of a black eye. I know I should care what other people say or the stares but it is way harder than I expected. People can be so rude! I was wonder if anyone could tell me how they clean their helmet? I was told to use alcohol and water but it seems that the area of the helmet that touches his forehead is stinky and that doesn't seem to help. Also it seems that his helmet sits so low on his face that he can barely see. He has to tip his head back just to look at things. I was thinking of asking to have it trimmed at our check up but I don't even know if that is possible. I'm sorry this post is so long and thanks to anyone who spent the time to read it...I am feeling very alone and a bit helpless. I'm glad I found this group.

Welcome ! As for cleaning, I was told only alcohol and no water,

we haven't been too hot yet, so it doesn't smell r sticky.

Mind you, I am " new " to this, my daughter is only 2 weeks into the DOC

band. I would be concerned with the scan being so far in advance to

the band being done and fitted to your childs head. I was under the

impression that timing was everything. Like getting the casting/scan

and 10 days later getting the band. I tried to change my appt from the

10 days to 11 and they said no, they needed her there on day 10.

Not much you can do about that now, except complain and that can't

hurt. As far as ds not being able to see well, I would tell them that

that is a problem and what can they do about it.

GOOD LUCK!

I am so sorry to hear your frustrations. My daughter is on day 5 of her DOC band. She got her band within 8 days of doing the plaster mold. I would think 4 weeks is way too long, which might mean it's not fitting him correctly. The DOC band is open on top and I've figured out a way to kiss the top of her head!! It's not quite the same, but it works for now. My daughter is just now 5 months old and seems to tolerate it quite well. She slept in it on Day 2 and has slept in it ever since. One thing my provider said was DO NOT keep taking it on and off. It's actually harder on the child than if you just leave it on them. So she gets it off for about 20 min in the morning when I clean it with alcohol and then another 30 min in the evening when I give her a bath and clean the helmet again. But that is it. The alcohol seems to work for us. Make sure you dress your son cooly, maybe that will help. We switched from sleeping my daughter in jammies to just a onesie so she isn't sweating. It seems to help. As for it going down to far on his face, I would think that is not okay. Have you gone in for any fittings yet? We go today for our first fitting. Maybe he just needs his helmet adjusted?

I hope things get better for you! Hang in there!!

To clean it use alcohol and a soft bristle toothbrush to really scrub it clean. After I scrub a section I also take a cloth towel and wipe off any excess. Also use some good scented shampoo for his head. I use the Lavender smelling shampoo on my son and his head has yet to smell. On Friday it'll be 6wks since he received his docband. As far as the stares..I can understand how frustrating it is. Just be confident about yourself and how handsome and cute your son looks. Also, remind yourself that this is in the best interest of your son and no one else needs to be concerned with it. But I have to be honest..I am very opinionated and usually my looks speak volumes to people. So, when I start to notice someone staring at my son I start to just stare at them in the same intense fashion that they're looking at him. Very quickly they turn the other way. My point in doing that is that they don't like someone staring at

them so they should stop being so freakin' rude and doing it to someone's child. I'm sure some people have other opinions on this but I've always been the type of person to confront issues head on and with confidence. Not to say that anyone else's strategy is wrong but...I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. As far as them waiting to make his band..yeah..that would have upset me too because you just lost over 2wks of treatment because they messed up. Hang in there..its always harder on us mommies than it is the kids. You'll do fine and see that you'll start to get used to the band. So much that he'll look like his head is too little when its off. You're doing the right thing so good for you for doing something you'll son will thank you for when he is older. Take care and God bless! Tammy (mommy to Christian, docband 4.18.08, Arlington,

....oh yes..and as far as him not being able to see..well have them shave some above his eyes. It shouldn't be like that. At my son's 1st fitting appt his was like that and I brought it to their attentiona nd they fixed it. At his first 2wk appt they noticed it started to go down more because of growth so they shaved more at that time as well. The same was done around his ears as well. I am concerned with the fit. We are seeing the othosis tomorrow. He has a red spot of the top of his forhead that looks like it may turn into a blister. This morning when he woke up the helmet was almost covering his eyes and it looks like it has rubbed some skin off in between his eyes. Needless to say he was not happy. He screamed the whole way to the sitters (about 20 mins) it just breaks my heart because I don't know what to do and I am feeling guilty for having to work full time and leave him when he needs me. I hope they can make some adjustments tomorrow. I don't know how your sons helmet goes on and off, but ours has velcro in the back and it seems like it is pinching the back of his head, it just doesn't seem right.

You are very talented, I love all the different helmet designs! Your son is just adorable. I was told I couldnt paint Gavin's, stickers only. I wonder if the mod podge would be ok to use..

When the shave out the inside od the helmet how do they know how much to shave, do they rescan the head first? I feel like I should know more about this and I don't!

Thanks for your kind words.

It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one dealing with rude people. I keep getting the "Did your baby fall down and hit is head?" or even "Did you drop your baby on his head?", I cannot believe the nerve of some people. I expected people to stare but not all the questions. The one thing that did make it a bit better was when I was in the checkout line at the store yesterday the people in line behind me asked what the helmet was for and I responded with the "He has a flat spot..." and a man who was walking by stopped and asked if I had just said my baby was wearing a helmet because of a flat spot on his head and I said YES! He proceeded to tell me that he has a 10 year old grandson who was never treated and still has a horrible flat spot on his head and his parents wish they would have done something about it. I left the store feeling like I was doing the right thing for my son. No matter how difficult it is or how rude people are, you are right it will be worth it in the end when he has a beautifully shaped head!

You said the velcro is in the back? I've never seen this before... I'd love to see a pic!

You waited a month to get the band, correct?

The fit may not be right because his head may have grown too much between the scan and the fitting. Industry standards are 2 weeks. Call your ortho, let them know what you know after all your research and you want a new band for free.

I hate to say this but I question your orthos experience. I'd ask him how many babies he/she treats, how long they have been banding, etc.

We had a hanger too - and they tried to give us a band that was too "old" - because they were waiting on ins. But I made them rescan and do it again - and they were more than happy to do it once I said that it had been longer than the "industry standard".

If your ortho is unaware, or unwilling to help... I'd demand a refund and go somewhere else.

I hope this doesn't sound harsh... I just want to make sure that you are as informed as possible, so that you can do what is best for your baby.

Hello ,

I thought I was reading my mind when I read your message. :)

I'm so happy you found this support group, it helped me so much from the beginning.

About the stare outside, I put stickers on his helmet "staring is rude". I couldn't help it, after 3 weeks I couldn't stand it anymore & got tired of explaning what I consider my business, not everybody's business at the store... :)

I washed the helmet once with shower gel, it was way to stinky for me even when we clean it twice a day with alcool. The orthotist didn't notice anything, to me it is just plastic & foam so I thought that was ok to do it...

I also use the toodler shampoo "burst of watermelon" from l'Oreal Kids, it's really helping too. (my orthotist told me to use that shampoo).

Sorry for the spelling mistake, I'm french & still learning English...

I just want you to know that you are not alone in this.

You will see results really soon & that helps a lot too to get use with the idea of your baby wearing a helmet.

Bye-bye,

Karine.

FYI, the DOCband should

only be cleaned with Rubbing Alcohol. The

liner is porous so any water or other cleaning solution (including shower gel)

will get absorbed into it. It might feel dry but it really isn't and then

the water will slowly eek back out and cause skin problems with the moisture

sealing against skin. Worse yet, skin irritations could develop on an infant’s

sensitive skin. Rubbing Alcohol evaporates. It isn't to

protect the liner so much as to protect the infant's skin.

Subject: [sPAM]Re: Re: New to the group..

Hello

,

I

thought I was reading my mind when I read your message. :)

I'm

so happy you found this support group, it helped me so much from the

beginning.

About

the stare outside, I put stickers on his helmet " staring is rude " .

I couldn't help it, after 3 weeks I couldn't stand it anymore & got tired

of explaning what I consider my business, not everybody's business at the

store... :)

I

washed the helmet once with shower gel, it was way to stinky for me even when

we clean it twice a day with alcool. The orthotist didn't notice anything, to

me it is just plastic & foam so I thought that was ok to do it...

I

also use the toodler shampoo " burst of watermelon " from l'Oreal

Kids, it's really helping too. (my orthotist told me to use that

shampoo).

Sorry

for the spelling mistake, I'm french & still learning English...

I

just want you to know that you are not alone in this.

You

will see results really soon & that helps a lot too to get use with

the idea of your baby wearing a helmet.

Bye-bye,

Karine.

FYI to support group,

We were told that our son's DOC Band wasn't covered by our insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield). Today in an effort to gather more information from BCBS, I was blessed enough with a very helpful representative who chose to read the benefits closely. Much to our surprise, the DOC Band is in fact covered by BCBS. The verbage still in their benefits package that says they don't include the Band is PRIOR to 2005.

So...all of you who have been denied by BCBS, recheck, resubmit your insurance claims, this could save you thousands of dollars! Our son is on his second band, this is a HUGE blessing!

Thought I'd pass on the good news, hopefully it will help others out there too!

Re: Re: New to the group..

FYI, the DOCband should only be cleaned with Rubbing Alcohol. The liner is porous so any water or other cleaning solution (including shower gel) will get absorbed into it. It might feel dry but it really isn't and then the water will slowly eek back out and cause skin problems with the moisture sealing against skin. Worse yet, skin irritations could develop on an infant¢s sensitive skin. Rubbing Alcohol evaporates. It isn't to protect the liner so much as to protect the infant's skin.
