Guest guest
Welcome, Kaci & ! If your doctor is using the Ponseti method, the casts shouldn't be removed until just before the appointment or at the appointment, because some correction will likely be lost. Hopefully your ortho will have a solution for you where they can either draw the blood, or they can arrange for the appointments to be back-to-back that morning or some other compromise. Make sure that you get the feedback from someone qualified at the ortho office though (someone who is in the know about the Ponseti method) not just a general nurse or assistant! Otherwise, I guess you would have to deal with that slight setback. Which is probably not the end of the world since it's something that needs to be done. If you can talk directly to the ortho, that would probably be the best source to advise you on this since he/she knows how well 's feet have been responding and could give you an idea of how much of a set back it might be to have them uncasted for the night. Guest guest
I'd try to avoid the night before...but perhaps the morning of? or at the ortho office. s. Cast removal question Hi. I am a newbie so I'll give a quick intro. My name is Kaci, my son was born Dec 17 with bcf. He is currently on his 3rd set of casts and our dr told us he will need 2-3 more after these are removed. We recently received a letter that the blood sample submitted for the newborn screening tests was not correct and they were unable to perform the tests so the bloodwork needs to be repeated. My pediatrician told me that they can only get the needed amount of blood from his heel. He gave us 2 options - we can go in to his office the day before 's next casting and they will remove the casts and do the bloodwork, or we can see if there is someone at the ortho office who can do the bloodwork. I have a call in to to the ortho office to find out what they want to do but my question is, is it ok to remove the casts the day before he gets new ones? I have read of different people soaking the casts off the night before, and I have read in other places that the casts should not stay off overnight because of regression. What are your experiences? Thanks, Kaci
Guest guest
Can they take it from his finger? My son had to return to the hospital for a blood test twice the week we brought him home. He had casts on both legs so they took it from his finger. lcf 6-19-05 > > Hi. I am a newbie so I'll give a quick intro. My name is Kaci, my > son was born Dec 17 with bcf. Guest guest
Maybe this post will come in too late. But when I worked in maternity/newborn nursing, we used to draw the blood from the veins on the top of the hand when we couldn't get a good heel stick. It's a bit harder than the heal because the babies move around so much, but it can definitely be done. > > Hi. I am a newbie so I'll give a quick intro.
