Clubfoot in the news

I haven't been around much lately--and the sheer number of messages to go

through to catch up is overwhelming--so forgive me if this is old news.

A few months back, a production crew came to Iowa City to do a news feature on

the Ponseti method. The story, once put together, was made available to TV

stations around the country that subscribe to their service. Watch the story

(as it aired on Monday in Columbia, SC), which features Dr Ponseti and our own

McLaughlin and her son Jakob, at:

Did anyone catch this on their local news?

The March of Dimes released its _Global Report on Birth Defects, The Hidden

Toll of Dying and Disabled Children_ last week. The report can be downloaded in

..pdf at:

I haven't had the time to go through the whole thing, which includes an

extensive database. I'm still unsure why the folks at MoD can't seem to get it

through their skulls that there are other (better!) ways of treating clubfoot

than surgery. This is from the executive summary of the report (page 4):

" The report gives numerous examples of successful strategies for care and

prevention. For example, structural birth defects including congenital heart

defects, congenital cataracts, cleft lip and palate and clubfoot, can be

corrected with pediatric surgery. "

If we want to talk success, cost-saving measures and long-term benefits, we

don't need to look any farther than the Ponseti method.

It's good to be back,

Naomi
