Guest guest
Ronit, I have a degree in Graphic Design, but I am from Texas. I don't know if my area compares to NJ as far as jobs go. Here in Amarillo, and Dallas/Fort Worth, the job market is tight. But, if she has a strong portfolio, she shouldn't have any trouble getting an interview. The problem with trying to get an interview is to make oneself stand out amongst the crowd, very hard to do. Even the most talented designers have to market their skills effectively to even get their foot in the door. Does her college not have some sort of placement service? If she has the time, and the money to do it, she could also make the rounds to the types of businesses she is interested in working for and simply show her portfolio, even if they aren't hiring. Getting a face to face meeting is sometimes the best way to make someone remember you when they do have a job opening. Portfolio, strong resume with cover letter, and even web promotion of portfolio pieces: these are tools I have seen many designers use to market themselves. Though, I can't say I have need of that as I work in a much smaller market than NYC or Philly and have gotten both jobs that I applied for. I wish her luck though, M Amarillo, TX > To my WLS Family > > I know this may or may not be appropriate to post and if not I appologize but > with all your diversified backgrounds I thought you could help me out. > My cousin recently graduated college with a degree in Graphic Design. Guest guest
Ronit, My sister is a Graphic Artist. My Mom and Dad owned a printing business until shortly after my Dad died. My sister started doing logos and designes for various printers when she first started out and eventually owned her own business. There are any number of places that could use her services. Has she considered free lancing until she finds a job? How does her portfolio look? Has she considered volunteering to get a little extra experience? Does she have a business card she can hand out when she meets new people (good old networking technique)? I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and it's a tough market out there. A lot of what has to happen is selling yourself better then anyone else. She may also want to consider doing temporary work or a part time job until she can find something. For some strange reason, it is always easier to find a job when you have a job. Lori Owen - Denton, Texas SRVG 7/16/01 Dr. Ritter/Dr. Bryce 479/335/???
