Dear Colleagues,

We have recently been contacted by Guillermo in Senator Diane Feinstein's office in LA regarding the heat related deaths among farmworkers in CA and were able to provide him with the information included in this message which I am forwarding to you. There are three resources here:

1. Title and order number of a book prepared for growers and owner operators on management of heat stress. This is produced by EPA and a good source of information. We have a limited supply available but could scan it and make it available electronically if you would find it to be helpful. If you would like a copy, please contact Josh Shepherd at Shepherd@....

2. A recently released report from CDC in the June 20th MMWR citing a study on heat related deaths over the past 15 years

3. A flyer received today from our colleagues at MAFO citing yet another recent death.

Please let us know if you would like some help in developing your community response to educating growers and farmworkers on this topic.

Dear Guillermo,

Thank you for contacting NCFH, we are always pleased to respond to inquiries from Sen. Feinstein's office as we deeply respect her ongoing recognition of the importance of the role of farmworkers in agriculture.

The title of the booklet produced by EPA for growers and owner operaters is "A Guide to Heat Stress in Agriculture", produced in 1993, and still current in content. ( Perhaps a more appropriate title would be A Guide to Heat Stress Management in Agriculture. )

In case you would like to contact EPA directly for bulk supplies, the publication number is EPA-750-b-92-001.

I have conferred with staff in the NCFH Resource Center and I understand that there is a research study which has been recently released, which is attached here.

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5724a1.htmTHis is a very recent publication, just released on June 20th put out by CDC in the MMWR. They are reporting 423 heat related deaths in the US during the 15 year period between 1992 and 2006.

Hopefully you are still receiving our Migrant Health Newsline and that is how you knew to contact us, if you are not familiar with it or need extra copies please be sure to let me know.

Please do not hesitate to call upon us in the future. A sus ordenes. Bobbi

Hello everyone,

The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and the Washington State Department of Employment Security are conducting a joint outreach effort to inform farmworkers about ways to prevent heat stress injuries or deaths. Pedro can talk a little more about new state laws for employers in the State of Washington. We at the Employment Security Department want to be proactive and saw what happened with the young farmworker in California that passed away. I understand that three more farmworkers in California have died in the last eight weeks.

Our agency operates an outreach program for migrant and seasonal farmworkers which for the most part provides information on employment matters (job openings, labor market information, training opportunities), but we also let them know of resources in the communities and special announcements. We saw our outreach program as an excellent vehicle for getting the word out about this serious problem. The Department of Labor and Industries in Washington has excellent outreach materials and has been very helpful.

Thank you.
