veneers and dental insurance -- surprising but good news

Hi all--I am 6 months post op (lower jaw 7/15) and am in the

finishing stages of braces (I should be done by early spring, got

them on Halloween 2002.

My dentist is now making plans for the finishing dentistry, including

4 veneers for my badly chipped/damaged front teeth caused by my many

years (well 36 years) of wear and tear with a Class III underbite.

Anyway, he sent off for a pre-estimate from the insurance company for

the veneers and it came back that the insurance would pay 60% (the

plan benefit for things like crowns, bridges & other prosthedontics)

of all of them so my cost is cut more than 1/2. I was so shocked and

happily surprised!!! I was totally prepared for there to be NO

COVERAGE at all because it would be considered " cosmetic " .

I called my dentist's office and they too were very surprised. They

looked at the dentist's narrative and they think that it was covered

because he detailed my case including the orthognathic surgery.

I have Delta Dental of Massachusetts.

Just thought that I would pass this along for anyone out there who

may need something like this after the surgery.

OH MY GOD...that's incredible news!

I am going to need to do something too and they are all talking

vaneers...SO expensive and delta dental of NY is covering nothing

along this whole process for me (Braces, perio, and then...)...today

I went for a permanent internal retainer on the lower front teeth (4)

of them...and 600$ later they won't cover a DIME.

But you inspire me...maybe I will make a call...did they do a

whole " prove it " cycle with the ins or just was just a regualr review

sent along?

THANK YOUUUUUUU! jo

Hi Jo,

Yeah, part of the shocking part of this whole thing was that

apparently, from what I understand from my dentist's office, my

dentist just wrote a narrative that was a case history with my

chipped/worn teeth and including my orthognathic surgery for

mandibular hyperplasia (my official diagnosis). He submitted this

narrative along with the pre-estimate for care.

Anyway, my dentist's office is going to call me back once they get

the same pre-estimate that I got from Delta Dental to confirm. I'll

let you know the results. The staff were in shock that they

actually approved the surgery. The medical assistant said that she

had been working there for 8 years and this was the first time she

had ever heard of a company approving veneers.

F.Y.I.--It lowered the cost per veneer for me from $640 to about

$250.

I'm glad my experience could be of some help. I'll keep you posted.
