I am glad that you decided to follow up that article. Similarly I was extremely disappointed to see just a small paragraph devoted to plagiocephaly with basically no useful information and a quite misleading take-home-message. the thing is that after my baby was diagnosed with plagio I had been beating myself up for not being informed enough on thin issue and wished I came across an article somewhere . We have subscribed to Parents and couple other parenting magazines long before my son was born and I was very religious about going reading them, but I never saw anything on plagio.  ZhyldyzFrom: SEANB1974 <seanb1974@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Thursday, June 18, 2009 2:37:39 PMSubject: article in Parents Magazine

Hi all,

Just a heads up.

My wife noticed in the July 2009 issue of Parents magazine that there is an article on plagiocephaly titled "Heads Up!". It was very disappointing to see they glossed over the subject and said

"Plagiocephaly isn't dangerous" with no explanation regarding the possible side effects and how many problems can be caused by it. We have since written an email to them, however, when we sent an email to the address listed in the magazine ("mailbagparents (DOT) com") it was immediately rejected for some reason.

If anyone has a better contact address, we would appreciate it. Also, please join us in making it clear that they made a serious error and it must be corrected before other parents are led to believe that this is something they should ignore.

Thank you!

I think it is also important to realize that all the tummy time in the world won't help plagio if the child has tort.  Our son had tort and now at 5 1/2 months it is resolved however I feel he would have never had to start band therapy or through all of this if it weren't for the tort as well as inutero positioning.  I think its good to spread the word so that parents are aware of the things that can happen however somethings no matter what you do its out of your hands and you have no control over it. You can't prevent torticollis at least I don't think you can, so all the information in the world would not have helped me or my son.  I also feel there should be more information about torticollis, as not many people have never heard of it unless you are going through it.  I just thought my son liked to look one way, I never thought anything was wrong.  Being a first time  parent I didn't know things to look out for, thank goodness we have such a wonderful and knowledgeable pedi who caught it at 2 months and started PT treatment that week. She is also very in tuned with plagio and told us at the 2 mo. appointment that banding may be an avenue we will go down so at least I could do all my research before we actually got it.  I know not all are as lucky.

Just thought I would share what I felt after the reading the article as well.

I agree that we wouldn't have been able to prevent plagio in my baby completely. As you mentioned it was partially due to his in utero position and of course torticolils. But I if I had read about torticolis and plagio ahead of time, maybe it had been less severe. He was 17 mm off at 4 month when we started the helmet process.

We noticed that something isn't quite right with the shape of the head very early - at 1st month check up, but it was difficult to convince our doctor, because of lots lots of hair, my son had. Basically you couldn't see asymmetry, I could only feel it when I run my fingers over his head, I knew something is there but I didn't know what it was. I wanted to cut off my babies hair when he turned 40 days, but my husband didn't want -- so he has to hear "we should have cut his hair then and we would have known early" from me maybe for the rest of his life.

The other thing is that my baby had ALMOST full range of motion, but he couldn't hold his head turned to one side for long time -- so our doctor didn't send us to PT and didn't give us any advice on stretching. Had I been informed I would have been more persistent. In any case we got the helmet pretty early on, again after I actively researched and diagnosed my son and insisted on prescription at 4 month. Unfortunately our story is way too common.

Over time I realized that it wasn't my fault totally that my baby has plagio. And it of course makes me feel better to know that many of you feel that one can't prevent pagio if there is tort.

Thanks.

Hi ,

your son sounds just like my daughter, she spends nearly all of her time on her

tummy she hates being on her back but because of her tort (which meant she

couldnt turn to her right) she has always slept to her left resulting in plagio.

Repositioning was impossible as she couldnt turn her head to the right at all!

Plus her forehead distoration would only be corrected if she spent time laying

with her forehead on the ground......
