Guest guest
Kat Absolutely the same experience. I always, and I mean always, stop supplements when I have a symptom flare and need to fall back to either clear liquids or my intro. diet or my soft-food stages. I’ve done this since day one on SCD. Actually I don’t take many supplements now, as most cause more problems than help. I always stick to just foods, and the few minerals I’m deficient in (I mix in water) for weeks, then I add back L. Acidophilus, and then, finally, my multivitamin. You can see I don’t take many supplements [grin] I do have blood sugar issues, so I can’t fast for very long periods. But eating soft foods, more liquid foods, for a while is something my digestion always appreciates. Good thing is that since year 3 on SCD I don’t get significant symptom flares except for my annual severe one that is triggered by something other than foods. Supplements are usually the source of any problems I experience with either my digestion or immune system. Formulas change in the supplements, so I frequently have to do more testing and experimenting to get the brand, dosage and delivery system right for me. Kim M. I feel like maybe it is because there is not much going on, so my guts get to rest and calm down. Not saying I'm going to starve myself! Just curious what other people's experiences are. Guest guest
Huh. That's really surprising actually. I didn't expect anyone else to share this experience! I went back to meat/eggs and bananas yesterday thinking I'd sort of re-start at the beginning, and it helped, but I couldn't tolerate a lot of water still. I figure the water-intollerance is just because of the need for my ulcers to clot before getting flushed. I started yogurt again 2 days ago too because I was craving it really bad and figured it was the good guys that wanted it. Still no supplements except prednisone and " Sleep-tonight, " a sleeping pill that contains 2 herbs that cut the production of cortisol by like 67% (in test subjects). Still have cramps so I'm thinking of using cramp bark tea today, since that always helps - and an area of inflamation right next to my colon I'm sure can't help! Still more blood today, but I am hopeful. I will go another day w/o supplements and see how I do. Right now I'm prescribed to take about 16-20 different capsuls a day (some more than one of one kind, e.g. 4-6 multivitamin capsuls to get the full dose). If I did want to cut them all out for a few days, I'm concerned about my Vitamin D (since there is hardly any sun in Seattle this time of year), and lose nutrition that I might really need, like my 4 B-complex pill/day to absorb iron better and boost my immune system. I am also taking boulardii, and I feel like I should keep taking that since I have thrush - so an overgrowth everywhere probably. Has anyone gotten sicker after taking out supplements for a while? Or lost stamina, energy, etc? I guess it's hard to believe that I could get enough of what I need from food alone when my diet is so restricted (avocados, blueberries, cabbage, zucchini, pears, applesause, olive oil - carrots and bananas only every few days due to yeast elimination diet). Can these foods plus meat/fish/eggs really be enough to make up for all the B vitamins, vitamin C, D, A, E, omega oils, etc? Probably, I'm just still skeptical. I am also wanting to start adding garlic to my diet for the yeast, and of course rotating it with other anti-fungals. Does that have the same effect as taking supplements when it's in food form? I discovered, during my fiasco a year and a half ago with pain meds containing illegals that I thought the meds were helping, but it turned out the only thing they were doing was feeding the bad bugs... and the pain I was getting when they wore off but gut cramps caused by the bacteria who wanted their luscious food. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
