Hi,

This is my first time writing although I have been browsing this

group for a while.

I have a tongue thrust and open bite. my orthodontist inserted a

tongue spur to try to help control my tongue thrusting. it looks

like a retainer with 3 spikes in it, and it sits at the roof of my

mouth with the spikes directly behind my front teeth. whenever my

tongue thrusts forward, it pokes my tongue, causing my tongue to

have a backwards reflex away from my front teeth and away from the

spur. when im not talking, my tongue rests at the bottom of my

mouth and when i swallow i have to lift my tongue to the roof of my

mouth behind the spur to swallow, so that i dont push against my

front teeth and get poked by the spur.

it took me some getting used to, especially with speech. i think i

slurred anytime i said something with " ssss " sounds for about 2

weeks. i had it inserted 2 months after i got the braces on, and

its been on for 3 months now, and i hardly notice it. it's supposed

to stay on for 6 months total, so in 3 more months i will be getting

it taken off and 3 months after that im having surgery.

HTH :)
