Hull's statement: " You chances are better with a PPO than an HMO since the network is much bigger and you can go directly to any in-network suregon. " I would agree with that but only to a point. Rememer that PPO authorizations go directly to the insurance company panel, where HMOs are often managed by a medical gruop which makes the decisions. Usually if the medical group is behind you it is my understanding that your chances are better. Of course this means you have to be within geographical distance (30 miles usually) of the medical group and the doctor a part of the network in that medical group. I have known people turned down with PPOs simply because it's easier to turn these folks down, since they are mostly on their own.
