Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, Let me give you a quick course in the shoes if you don't mind, it will make it easier for you to communicate with your doctors and other parents about it all. The shoes & bar together, the whole " system " is called either a FAB: Foot Abduction Brace or a DBB: Dennis Brown Bar. Either name, same system of shoes & bar. The stiff white shoes on a bar is known as the " Markell " FAB, because it's made by the Markell company. The soft sandles on a bar is known as the FAB, as it is made by a man in Iowa named . Then of course there is the Dobb's FAB - a whole new system designed by Dr. Dobbs in St. Louis, Missouri. AT this time, each system is dependent on it's own bar. That is to say if you have Markell shoes they need to be on a Markell bar; shoes only fit a bar, and Dobbs is still a work in progress from what I understand although I do believe he is trying to make his bar interchangable between shoe types. Dobbs can be reached at mattdobbs@... to answer your questions more thoroughly. If you are interested in the FAB system (sandles), contact MD Orthopaedics, Inc. P.O. Box 125 604 North Parkway Street Wayland, IA 52654 Telephone- 1- 1-(local) 1-(fax) mdortho@... And for Markell shoes, I don't have that handy but a google search for Markell shoes Ponseti or something of that nature, ought to steer you to their web site. I hope I helped clear some of that confusion up between the various systems in use by clubfoot children right now. s. Shoe options Hi! My son has been wearing his shoes for about 3 months now, everything seems to be going well. We have our first follow up appt. with Dr. H this week. I wanted to look into different types of shoes for that would be a little more comfortable then the standard hard white ones he has to wear now. On the Photos links, I came across a pair of brown sandals that look great and I also saw the Dobbs bar, which also looks great because it allows the baby to crawl. I wondered if anyone knew the name of those sandals? Is there a website where I can view different shoe options? Does anyone know of any tennis shoes that has the bar? Also one more question, Is the baby suppose to wear the shoes/brace 3 months straight 23/7 after the tenomy or 3 months straight after the 3 week casting after the tenomy? Thanks for your help! -Bonnie
Guest guest
Hi Bonnie, In all honesty, if the Markell's are working you don't need to go to the other shoes. They ARE softer and perhaps a bit more comfortable but most babes do just fine in the Markells. They always seemed comfortable for my daughter even if they are a bit hard seeming to us. Plus, the Markells are quite a bit cheaper. If your insurance pays, you should feel free to choose any shoes for your child that you prefer, but if you're going to have to pay for them yourselves it may be a different story. Now, with that said I really, really like the PM's (short for Ponseti/'s - these are the sandals) for older children who are standing, walking, etc. For many reasons, but mostly because the soles are flat on the floor (except for dorsiflexion) and they have proven to be very easy for my daughter to walk in unaided. She is however, almost 3yo so walking is a big part of her life lol. If you want to switch, by all means ask for it. But if money is tight, you may want to consider waiting till is closer to walking/pulling to stand to get the most benefit from your $. I like both shoes, but I am now converted to the PM's because when she stood in her Markells, her toes would point down as she stood to steady herself on that bar that sticks down. I didn't really like that so much, although it didn't seem to cause any issues with her correction. I just like this flat shoe much better. HTH - and the 23/7 for 3mo does come after the tenotomy cast is removed. It will soon be a distant memory, promise!! Just don't let him reduce to nights only k? I don't think he does but I thought it worth mentioning again. Kori At 04:10 PM 1/29/2006, you wrote: >Hi! Guest guest
I wanted to thank everyone for all the helpful feedback. Any time I have a questions you guys are always so wonderful- glad this website is here I think I will stick to the Markells until gets to the walking stage or has an issue with them. I just wanted to make sure I had all the options/questions I needed to ask ready for Dr. H as I have to travel far to get to him. Almost done! I guess we have another 2.5 more weeks to go in the bar (23/7)...I would of swore Dr. H told me 3 months after the tenomy, maybe it was a mistake. Anyway, thanks again for all your advice. -Bonnie > >Hi! My son has been wearing his shoes for about 3 > >months now, > >everything seems to be going well.
