Guest guest
Hi, I have been on this list for about 4 weeks, after first going dairy free, then also gluten free. I want to share with you all our progress after 2 weeks gfcf free. When we decided to do this diet it was because we were at our wit's end with my son having increasing difficulty and the only option appearing to be more and stronger medication. We had reached the stage where we were prepared to try anything, even a diet, which I didn't totally believe would work, for me it was more of 'clutching at straws' - I would have tried just about anything. So, his improvement really has been a delightful and unexpected surprise. The first thing we noticed was that he was calmer. Then he started initiating affection. He has become much more tolerant of touch - prior to the diet we did not touch him as he would very likely hit us! He was extremely tactile defensive. Now he is tolerating touch much, much more. We are still having some explosive outbursts, but they are noticeable fewer, less intense, and of shorter duration. What would have set him off for hours before, now will be a minor hiccup. The best thing of all is that instead of increasing his medication which was the option we had been considering pre diet, we have now REDUCED it by half! This is totally amazing. We are now realistically optimistic that we may be able to get him of the medication altogether. Today he is at a friends house - another huge improvement for a child who has been so clingy, that he won't stay anywhere without us for the past 6 months at least. His eating, which was major concern prior to the diet has normalised too. He was a compulsive eater, and the overeating has led to a steady weight increase. Now he eats 3 meals with small snacks in between sometimes, but normal amounts for a child his age - no more demanding food because he is 'starving' after just having eaten a huge meal, nor grabbing food out the fridge. We have always believed that he was feeding his brain. He has lost weight - over a kg in two weeks, which is a good thing as he is 54kg at 8 years of age. Even if we had no other positive changes we would continue the diet just for this benefit. As they say, 'proof is in the pudding' - our family are now sworn believers! It was very difficult at first, but now we are settling into it well, and we are all eating much healthier.
