That was never my situation.

My ortho was highly recommended by every dentist I discussed him

with, and he was absolutely convinced that the surgeon he sent me to

was the best. (I swear that the two of them have some sort of esp

hookup and think alike.)

Fortunately, my surgeon was kind and funny, as well as skilled and

knowledgeable. He explained everything to me thoroughly, the

possible good and the possible bad, and left me all the leeway in

the world to back off, if that's what I wanted to do. I took an

instant liking to him, and trust in him, and he didn't let me down.

Now, if the circumstances had been different, here's what I think I

would have done:

Gone back to my ortho and said that I felt an instinctive preference

for one or the other, or personality clash with one or the other,

and asked for his evaluation of the two.

I'd also have been talking with my general dentist, my husband's

general dentist, my periodontist, the endodontists I've used,

friends, colleagues and everybody else I could find who might have

offered me input.

And then I would have decided.

I do think it's possible to have an ancient surgeon who's been doing

these procedures since 1492, has done thousands and not kept up with

the changes, and is less helpful to you than a young whippersnapper

who's just out of training and has learned the latest. I also think

it's a good idea to have someone who has a number of them under his

belt. It's just like everything else in this world: find as much

info as you can, trust your gut and instincts and knowledge and

advisers, and take your chances...
