Darn leg pain [1 Attachment]

Like many of you, I've had back problems for years (one of those nurses who didn't use correct body mechanics!). 3 years ago I actually was seriously considering surgery, which I swore I would never do. Then I learned about MBSR (Meditation- Based Stress Reduction), and was able to reduce my pain to a manageable level. About a week ago, the leg pain started up again (the leg pain has always been worse than the back pain for me). Most of my vertebrae are shot, and I've had a spinal fusion in my neck. I started doing my meditation more faithfully, but every day it's gotten worse. I can't think of anything that would have strained my back or triggered this. By Tuesday I could only stand or walk for a couple of minutes, and by Wed. it was hurting from my hip all the way down past my ankle. In the past I could lie down &

get relief, but that's not helping now. Wed. evening I just couldn't stand it any more, couldn't sleep, & I went to the E.R. They gave me some Dilaudin, which basically knocked me out for a couple of hours, then I was back where I started. The only thing that helps at all is ice, so I spent the last two nights with my left leg packed in ice from the hip to the ankle! The pain is equivalent the arm pain from my ruptured cervical disc. Today my neurologist gave me an epidural steroid injection, which has helped slightly--took my pain from a 9 down to a 6-7. I'm hoping it will improved some more in the next day or so. Tomorrow I have about 7 neighbor kids coming for a workshop to make first aid kits for their bikes & have a simple first aid class. I'm looking forward to it; I can lie on the couch & let my daughter & granddaughter do most of it. If this shot doesn't work, I'm going to

have to consider surgery again. I just can't take this, really. I thought the neuropathic pain in my feet was bad--no contest. Well, I'll quit complaining. My front flower garden is going great! Mostly perennials. I have a plant called the balloon flower--the flower buds puff out, then open into star-shaped flowers. I've never seen this plant before, but it's really pretty. My favorite is the silver mound plant. So here is a photo to brighten your day also! Ramblin' RoseModerator

Good point, Rick. In my case, I'm sure that's coming from my back. I've had it before, but not this bad. The only good thing is that it's making the neuropathic pain in my feet not seem so bad! The worst pain I've ever had was shoulder & arm pain from a ruptured cervical disc 9 years ago. I tried traction for 6 weeks before having a spinal fusion. By that time I had lost the reflexes in my arm, was losing a lot of strength & getting numbness (this was before the neuropathy from sarc). It felt like someone was twisting my arm off at the shoulder. The only neck pain I had was from the muscle stiffness. I had immediate pain relief from the surgery, reflexes & strength returned within a few weeks & numbness resolved in about 6 months. Unfortunately, lumbar surgery doesn't have the same track record as cervical, although there have been some advances in microsurgery. I'm calling my neuro first thing tomorrow to schedule an MRI & talk about options. I can't be up more than 10-15 minutes, and it's not a whole lot better lying down. I doubled the dose of Percocet last night, took a sleeping pill & packed my entire leg in ice! With all that I was able to sleep for about 4 hours.

As far as Neurontin, I'm one of those folks who spaces out & totals her car. After that happened to me, I learned of several other sarc folks who had the same experience. It worked well for my neuropathy, but I had to switch to Lyrica.

Hi, Speak thoroughly with your Neurologist about your specific pain there is always a small possibility that it's coming from another problem such as a pinched disc. I have such a problem with a pain in my fore arm. It's very easy to blame everything on Sarc and it's possible that Sarc aggravated an older injury or underlying problem. Hope it gets resolved and you feel better.Rick

Rose, Once you've had back/spinal surgery it opens up a can of worms. Anything is possible. So many parts of our body are related to our spinal column, a pain in the foot or arm can stem from a neck or back injury. This is an area where even the pros are often stumped. I write everything down and review my notes every few months and try to piece together what might be related or coincidence and speak to my doctors about it. Sometimes doctors need help as well.best wishes,Rick
