Second to addressing diet & nutrition, getting a dog for our son was the

best thing we ever did. Get one that is easy-natured and calm and big

enough that a child's thoughtless handling won't easily hurt it. Golden

retrievers are a good choice for this, and you can research and find

some other mellow breeds. But we went to the pound and found a lovely

mutt. She loves attention from the kids, and when she's had enough, she

just gets up and gets out of their way.

It has been a blessing for our son to learn to hug and love her, to feed

her and learn to recognize her body language. She makes few demands and

is an endlessly forgiving companion. Now he loves to go to dog shows,

and it gives him a topic of discussion he knows about because so many

people have dogs.

Good luck-
