Guest guest
Hi. I'm new to the group and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the cranial helmet made by Hanger. I have read some bad reviews about the Hanger helmet on other websites and wanted to see if anyone has had experience with this brand. Also did your children have to go through a CT scan to get diagnosed with plagiochephaly.
Guest guest
- We had a Hanger Starband and were extremely happy with our results! My daughter, Lucy, started wearing it at 5.5 months of age for 11mm of plagio and we finished in 6 short weeks at 0mm. Our orthotist was also wonderful, and from what I understand this can make or break your expereince and results. Also, we did not need a CT scan - our ped gave us referral based on assessment alone. They normally will only do a CT if they are concerned about cranicynostosis. I too read a lot of bad things about the STARband and was thinking that the DOC band was the only way to go - but I am glad I stuck to the STARband and was extremely happy with my results. Just make sure you are comfortable with your orthotist and try to find others on here who may have experience at the Hanger location you will be going to and see how they liked the orthotist. Where is your Hanger located? Good Luck! Meg, mom to Lucy, (1year), STARband grad 1/09, Milwaukee, WI > > Hi. Guest guest
There have been many great experiences with the Hanger band. The key is a skilled ortho. What Hanger would you be going to? Maybe someone in the group has or is going there and can share their experience with you. Angie Hanger Helmet Hi. Guest guest
I am also curious about the Hanger Helmet - I have an appt. with my 6 month old next week. We are in Phoenix - how do you know if the ortho is skilled? > > There have been many great experiences with the Hanger band. The key is a skilled ortho. What Hanger would you be going to? Guest guest
A CT scan?? Oh no….definitely not. All it takes is a few measurements with a soft measuring tape and some calculations and your child can be diagnosed.
Guest guest
A CT scan is used to rule out craniosyntosis. This is the early fusion of the cranial plates (sutures closing) that can restrict brain growth. If there is some concern that the problem might be cranio then a CT scan is done. If it is only the head shape that is involved (no fusion) then banding can proceed. My daughter had brachy and we never had a CT scan. However it is not uncommon for a doctor to request a scan. cranio is pretty rare. -christine sydney, 3 yrs, starband grad > > A CT scan?? Oh no..definitely not. Guest guest
We are going to try and use Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO because I don't think there is anything in Topeka, KS so the closest place is KC. > > There have been many great experiences with the Hanger band. Guest guest
Hi, We had our assessment with Dr. Singhal at Children's Mercy and then worked with Thom at the KU Hanger. Thom was awesome. He's been doing helmets for 14 years or so, I think. I was really worried that we were going to need to drive back and forth a lot (we live in Manhattan, KS) for adjustments, but actually we just went every three weeks and needed only one extra visit. Our son went from 11mm to 0mm in under three months and his CI improved from 94% to 86%. By the way, that Hanger does use the STARband. Our son had no trouble adjusting to it. One more thing...I don't know if you've gotten your script yet. Dr. Singhal is super-renowned cranial surgeon, but he is NOT a big fan of banding. At our consultation, he really tried to discourage us, with the usual " it doesn't really matter if your kid's head is a little weird " line. I know someone else who had this experience too. I almost decided to wait another month before going ahead with the casting after his spiel. But I was REALLY glad I followed my original instinct and went ahead with the helmet, especially because I liked working with Thom and the results were so quick. On the other hand, the letter Singhal wrote for me to send to the insurance people was really strong. I don't yet know if they're going to reimburse us, but his letter could not have been more convincing. Good luck! > > > > There have been many great experiences with the Hanger band. Guest guest
, I forgot to answer your other question. At the Hanger KU Thom does a casting instead of a scan. It just took ten minutes or so and my son (who was 6 months at the time) didn't really have any problem with it. I guess they don't have a scanner there, because all the measurements were just done by hand, with a special tool. > > > > There have been many great experiences with the Hanger band. Guest guest
Thanks for the info. Guess I'll find out about my ortho at the appointment on Monday. I am in Akron, Ohio. > > An experienced ortho is the key. What hanger location would you be using? Maybe someone in the group is or has been there and can share their experience. We used a Hanger location in Missouri but they used a STARband at that location. Hanger is an active band. > > Angie > Hanger Helmet > > > > > > Hello, > I was all set to get a Star Band. I had my appointment and everything. Turns out my insurance will only approve Hanger. I had to jump through a lot of hoops just to get this apporval. They aren't budging on this. I " m stuck with Hanger. Is Hanger considered an active or passive helmet? From what I can understand, it seems to work like the DOCband and Star Band. I have found some negative posts about skin irritation with a Hanger Band. What is everyones opinion/experience good or bad with Hanger? > Thanks! > >
Guest guest
From what I've been able to figure out on this board, some Hanger locations use the STARband and some use a band that is made by Hanger. We were in the same position. The insurance company said that it would only cover Hanger. I didn't get very far in investigating this option because they told me that it would probably take a full month to get her banded. was too old for us to wait that long. We paid out of pocket for our STARband through another company. If were younger, I probably would have at least scheduled a consultation with them. , mom to , 22.5 months STARband grad banded at 14.5 months land Re: Hanger Helmet hi kristen,i dont understand all this because i actually got my STARband from a hanger orthotics building! my sons helmet is from orthoamerica, it has the star on the back of it and everything and it is working great!maybe you should talk to the doctors at the hanger place about all this and if worse comes to worse, if you really want the starband you will have to purchase it or even take the hanger band and feel lucky it got paid for. some insurance companies wont pay for ANY of the helmets!good luck with you and your little one!>> Hello,> I was all set to get a Star Band.
