Some obvious commonsense points regarding

evaluating " anecdotal " reports (aspartame toxicity):

1. The plural of anecdote is data--

2. If, when many are studied with an open and curious mind,

there is a fairly obvious serious symptom syndrome,

(headache to many body pains to mental symptoms to ...)

3. or syndroms, as the experiencers' weak systems react first

(diabetics, depressed, allergic,...)

4. with characteristic kinds of experiencers,

(more females, older, obese,...)

5. with typical patterns of escalation with continued exposure to

increasing amounts of causes,

(some experiencers used 4 L daily diet soda for years...)

6. failure of extensive testing to prove well-known or rare causes,

(MRIs, etc. eliminate multiple sclerosis, strokes, brain tumors,

epilepsy...)

7. failure of a wide variety of treatments and medicines,

(experiencers end up with large number of daily drugs...)

8. unusual and deepening relief of symptoms within days and weeks

after finally removing the previously unsuspected cause,

sometimes inadvertently, more often due

to information outside the usual medical channels,

(brain fog lifted, ordinary energy restored, can sleep all night...)

9. evidence of addictive behavior patterns,

(unquenchable craving for diet soda...)

10. typical withdrawal symptoms for days and weeks,

(relief of headache, but increase of fatigue, nausea, weakness...)

11. prompt reoccurence of symptoms upon inadvertent or

deliberate reexposure,

(single stick of gum or dish of diet yogurt...)

12. Close relatives and family members also have similar

problems with the causes.

13. reasonable consistency of symptoms and their

sequences with the partially known and inevitably very

complex biochemistry of the causes, (especially as studied

and reported by experts not funded by vested interests)

interacting with a huge variety of experiencers,

exposed in modern society to an unprecedented barrage

of novel chemicals,

(pesticides, artificial colors, sugar, alcohol, nicotine,

caffeine, mercury, fluoride, carbon monoxide, etc.,

while aspartame provides triple toxicity: methanol,

phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and their complex

metabolites....)

14. and last, but surely not least, sudden

induction into a worldwide medical cult of mindless

minions, including a number of deluded medical doctor

and academic professor dupes of " Mad Betty " i...

These issues are discussed in detail in the masterful text

by H.J. MD, based on two decades of clinical work,

summarizing 1200 cases, with over 600 references

from the standard medical research literature:

Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic, 1038 pages,

(details at end of post).

July 27 2001 Hello , May I post this account widely on

the Net, including your email address? You may want to add more

details about your medical history, diet, etc. These detailed, fresh

accounts are very helpful in convincing others that aspartame

toxicity is a genuine issue. Thank you, Rich Murray

Dear Betty,

What a relief to find out what is happening.

I've been treated for fibromyalgia for almost a year without much

success.

As I am writing this, I am printing out information

to take to the clinic where my Dr. is.

I have been using Equal, ect for as long as it has been out

[first FDA approved in July, 1981] and I

have many of the symptoms listed in the articles.

When I told my husband about this,

the first thing he said was, " Dump it all! " We are both diabetics

and unfortunately use quite a bit of it.

I have recently switched to Splenda.

It tasts much better, but now I am worried about it having bad side

affects too. Do you know anything about it?

I am planning on taking the " no Aspartame test " Recently, I have

been having a lot of muscle aches especially from my hips down,

and I have started coughing- not a lot, but it has a terrible taste to

it, I don't know if there is a connection or not.

You can count on me to get the word out to as many people as I can

about this. I am really dissappointed that the Am. Diabetes Ass.

endorsed this menace. I'm going to write them and cancel my

membership because of this.

More diabetics need to do the same. I am just sick over all this, and

mad at Reagan for his part in it. Why should we ever trust our

government again? Tower / Texas

Betty, Since you told me not to trust Splenda, I have gone back

to drinking regular sodas. I keep it to one a day, sometimes I'll

have a carbonated water with lemon (this is an acquired taste but

it's worth it)

I have been without aspartame for three weeks and the first

thing I noticed was the craving for carbos, and sodas was gone.

I drink a lot of water instead. As a diabetic, friends were alarmed

when they saw me drinking a ginger ale. I have had adult onset

diabetes for 6 years and it has NEVER been under control. My numbers

would be 148 then 207, 189, 221, etc, always too high and NEVER

stabilized. It's been extremely frustrating and scary because I know

what happens, my sister in law has dialysis three times a week! Low

and behold- since I have gotten off that poison, my sugar numbers have

plummeted, and stabilized. I saw my Dr. today, she couldn't get over

the difference in me. I've lost 6 pounds already without trying- I'm

not craving anymore! I have energy coming out my ears (great thing

for a woman who's almost 50) My itching, fatigue and migraines have

gone, and my husband loves the me without the grouchies! I had a

regular soda yesterday evening, and two graham crackers later for a

snack- my blood sugar for today (drum roll please!) was 95! I may

be able to lower my dosage, my goal is to be off them completely!

Thanks for all your hard work on this campaign!!

A new crusader!

Dear Betty, I have been decreasing my intake of this poison daily,

trying to avoid withdrawal, but I still am.

But something wonderful has happened!

For the past eleven years, I have been suffering a horrible prickly,

burning itch. It feels similar to an ant bite, but I never get a rash,

hives, bumps or anything to show for it.

I remember it starting just on my back, usually

after I took my shower.

I tried every anti itch cream on the market- to no avail!

The itch has worsened over the years. Three years ago, I had two

episodes that summer that had I had a loaded pistol,

I could've done myself in.

My husband was at a loss to help me.

Last year I asked for help from an allergist.

Aftter several sessions, he said I didn't need to come back

because he couldn't help me. He had no idea what my problem was.

When I found out about my fibromyalgia, I assumed it was from that

because of the neurotransmitter malfunction.

Well, two weeks ago, I started decreasing

my intake of aspartame, and the last episode of itching I had was

slightly over a week ago, and very mild.

I am so tickled that I could almost cry.

My close friends are happy for me too

because they've seen how much I've suffered,

and my husband is just joyful that I'm not screaming and crying

because of the itching.

When I read that aspartame turned into formic acid, I put two and two

together. I am severely allergic to fire ants.

I almost died three years ago because I put my knee

into a nest and had almost 200 bites.

I now carry 3 " Epi-pens " with me because of the severity

of the reaction.

Since I had formic acid in my system with aspartame,

the itch felt just like the bites

but were not severe enough to cause a mark,

just enough to drive me crazy.......

thank you and God, that chapter of my life is over.

The other funny thing is that I still have a soda a day,

but it's a regular seven up or ginger ale............

my blood sugar numbers are in the normal range and

staying there!! Who would've believed this?

I wish we could sue the FDA for

being such idiots! Thanks again-

Yes. And we cannot forget that prior to those 2x-blind/etc.

studies in peer-reviewed journals come anecdotes, followed by more

anecdotes, followed by more anecdotes, followed by (maybe) someone

getting interested in why there are so many anecdotes regarding

whatever-it-is, and perhaps also developing some hypothesis as to

why whatever-it-is is happening, followed by very informal,

non-blinded clinical trials (scarcely better than anecdotes),

which may or may not be published, along with anecdotal info, in

non-peer-reviewed journals (and/or published as convention

abstracts or presentations, and/or published as letters, etc.,

etc.), followed by...... pant, pant!

See? It is a long path to that golden end of unassailable blinded,

controlled, randomized [blah-blah] trials published in top

journals. *Ignoring* things (or casually dismissing things) that

have not reached that level is about as foolish as becoming wildly

enthusiastic about them. It is important to remember, when it

comes to human health, that the goal (for most of us, at least) is

not clearcut " scientific conclusions " , but rather what works --

and " what works " at any given moment could well be years or

decades away from anything resembling scientific verification.

Vitamin E worked for heart disease no less well back in the days

when JAMA and most of the medical establishment denounced it as

quackery (or was that " dangerous " quackery?); the fact that that

establishment has come around to a mature view does not change the

efficacy of the substance -- nor does it change the beneficial

results that many millions secured even *as* the substance was

denounced.

Absolutely.
