Another idea...Our 4 1/2 year old son wouldn't poop in the potty until a few

days ago. Now he's gone three straight days and declared he's " really getting

into it " and " could poop in anything now. " So we're finally on track there.

We didn't do anything new the day he finally went. We've been going in potty

phases. We did a lot of encouraging things for a few days, and if or when he

showed resentment to the idea of potty training, we would back off for a

month or more. Finally, this time around, he was receptive. He was

constipated a lot in the past, and was worried pooping in the potty would

hurt. This potty training phase, we waited until a time when his poop was

flowing out pretty easily, then started encouraging him again. Of course, it

didn't hurt to promise him a toy he'd had his eyes on for his first

successful effort, although this idea didn't work the previous times we'd

tried He was surprised and thrilled when he discovered pooping in the potty

didn't hurt.

Perhaps try feeding your son something that will really get his poop soft,

then try again. My son really needed a lot of verbal encouragement while he

was sitting on the potty, too. He was really scared to try. This sounds

bizarre, but I pretended I was his poop, and said stuff like " Let me out!

Please push me out! " in a cutesy voice. When the poop first landed in the

potty, my son blew it a kiss...And when we went to the toy store to buy the

coveted toy, my son loudly and proudly announced to the cashier and everyone

around " I'm getting this toy because I pooped in the potty! "

Good luck!

Try this book - very graphic:

> I think best late at night doing dishes. I just came up with a

wonderful idea. Since my son is so visual,I think he needs a video to

show the " pooping process " . We have 3 different potty videos, none

which show a human being having a BM. When my son watches us he sees

us sit on the potty a while and then soon get up. Well he is doing

that and he thinks he is " pooping on the potty " . Do you get where I

am coming from? Would it be considered illegal to do such videotaping

and to show it to a child? I truly think he needs to see the whole

action taking place. Anyone know of a waterproof camcorder. This is

all too graphic sounding but I will figure out a way to tape the

process and hope that my husband agrees with my wonderful idea.

Hi there -

When I was at the Autism Society of Los Angeles Conference in April,

a lecture was about Visual Stratagies for Teaching and they suggested

doing just that - taking a picture of a poop in the potty and using

it as a visual cue for our kids that respond well to these cues. What

the therapist did was get one of those joke poops from a novelty

shop - that way nobody had to " star " in the picture - and she took a

photo of it in the potty and used that. It worked so well for this

child that other parents wanted copies of the picture and she had to

run off about 12 copies. She said she wondered what the people at the

film lab thought of her.... :)

Thanks for reminding me about this - we are having a terrible time

about potty training with our son. I guess I should make a trip to

the novelty shop!
