Guest guest
Kat Magnesium can cause looser stools, aggravating diarrhea if that is what you are dealing with. I happen to be deficient in magnesium, so need to supplement it daily (and I deal with chronic constipation). My understanding from my research is that most adults are low in magnesium because of eating so much processed foods. We’re making the switch to healthier food choices since we’re on SCD, but often we need to supplement minerals and vitamins for a while until our digestions improve. Our bodies can’t get enough nutrients out of the food we’re eating while our digestive system is compromised. Electrolyte drink is a good option for supplementing critical minerals. You don’t need to have it every day, unless you have constant diarrhea and need to replace fluids and minerals. I would start off using the SCD electrolyte drink recipe as it is, using baking soda instead of magnesium and potassium. Or give ELyte a try. You can leave out the honey, use a fruit juice instead. I drink fruit juice separately from the electrolyte drink because my stomach tolerates it better. I substituted magnesium and potassium for baking soda, and made some other changes, because that is what suits my body the best. You may not need to do that. ELyte has also been helpful in supplementing a lot of other minerals. I use both, because I go through a lot of electrolyte drink, especially when I’m physically active (neuromuscular issues). I also read in several places magnesium glycinate is better tolerated by those dealing with diarrhea. I would probably continue taking the calcium/magnesium supplement (if legal) since you can use the minerals. But you could find one that has magnesium glycinate instead of another form, or perhaps take it less often for a while. Your diarrhea should slowly improve the longer you’re on SCD. Some magnesium-rich foods that are also SCD-legal: Broccoli Spinach Fish, particularly halibut Nuts, peanuts Oysters Scallops Kim M. For today I've just been drinking tons of water, adding salt to my chicken soup/chicken liver mix, and I happened to look up the potassium levels of acocados - turns out they are higher than bananas. The remaining ingredient is magnesium. Any tips on foods rich in magnesium? Also a sidenote about magnesium. People were telling me to stop taking my Calcium/Magnesium suppliment when I had D because magnesium is supposed to cause D. But it sounds like it is also really necessary (along with Calcium - my levels were on the low end). Any thoughts? Thanks, Kat
Guest guest
My IBS is the flaky kind, where you never know what the heck is going to happen. Can change several times during a day even. So I have always needed to be extremely careful about magnesium, which however, I need. So when my old doctor told me that magnesium glycinate was " bowel neutral " I got some. I would not say bowel neutral, but it's much milder. Even with this I have to be very careful and not take much, like maybe 100mg. Far short of what I need but you know what it can provoke if you get too much. I also read in several places magnesium glycinate is better tolerated by those dealing with diarrhea.
