Can someone help me?

I've only read a bit on here about blockages. Someone please spell out for

me what exactly they are, how you get them, what the symptoms are for having

one, and how are they gotten rid of? Thank you so much!

I'm not sure what kind of blockage you are talking about, but I'm guessing

it is bowel blockages? With the RNY, people may get stoma blockages where

they have to have the blockages scoped out (endoscopy, I believe). I had a

bowel obstruction at 8 months post-op. The obstruction was caused by the

growth of adhesions/scar tissue that just happened to grow the right way, so

as to wrap around my ailmentary limb. In my case, it required emergency

surgery so that no part of the intestines would die off.

You can get bowel obstructions at any time with or without any kind of major

abdominal surgery. A friend recently had an emergency appendectomy and even

though he had never had abdominal surgery, he had quite a few adhesions.

The symptoms in my case, and I believe usually, are very apparent. It is a

severe, double-over type pain. You definitely know that there is something

wrong and it wouldn't be something you could ignore.

All that being said, I do know that some blockages have been worked out with

time - ie. a kink in the bowel. Also, some people have more mild symptoms

for a longer period of time and think it might be something else. Bottom

line, in my opinion, is that we all stay well tuned to our body and if

something isn't quite right -- call and ask your surgeon's office about

it -- better to be safe than sorry.
