Guest guest
EAt lots of veges, salads, etc. Stay away from salt as much as possible, and hydrate-- no caffeine, sodas or alcohol. Just the same common sense stuff we all know and talk about doing-- it's hard when you are on prednisone. If you can exercise-- do so. Hope it helps, Tracie NS Co-owner/moderator To: Neurosarcoidosis Sent: Monday, December 15, 2008 8:49:01 AMSubject: steriods is there any way to lose weight while reciving treatment
Guest guest
I can only speak from my experience and what I've learned from others so far. When I began on the steroids, I weighed 125-130 pounds. Over the course of 3 years I got up to as high as 237. In the beginning, I could not lose ANY weight. In addition to the steroid weight, I was emotionally eating to deal with my issues with this disease. Since going lower in my pred dosage, and doing walking and yoga, I'm now down to 183. It has taken me almost a year to get to this weight. All that to say, losing weight could be a possibility. But this disease can in some cases debilitate you to the point that movement of any kind can be impossible or unbeleivably painful. Not trying to scare you, just saying. I have been blessed with a Bikram yoga studio opening in my area. It's 90 mins sessions in a 105 degree room. Sounds brutal, but it is low impact on my joints, makes me focus on what my body can do and not what it can't, and gives me that mind/body/spirit connection I crave. I also walk whenever I can. It has made a monumental difference in my life. Sometimes I only walk for 30 minutes, sometimes 45 mins. I try really hard to listen to what my body is telling me. At first when I started, I would exercise for a little bit and then have to sleep for the rest of the day because I would wipe myself out. TOTALLY. Get with your primary care doctor and come up with a plan. Go to all appointments, take notes in between appts about how your body is responding to discuss with your doctor. Start really, really, really, really, really, really, really small and build up when and if you can.All that to say, I've learned that for me, its no longer about losing weight, but more about staying alive and viable and getting more healthy. When I look at it that way, it becomes more about better quality of life instead of what I look like on the outside. I'm still learning to embrace my extra belly curves and extra chins and extra everything. But you know what, my children love the extra cushion to lay on.Hope this helps some...Koshie "How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the strong.
