It is a natural thyroid pill, ** one problem with armour is that it does not break down - it takes literally HOURS inside our pouch to break down and then NOt be absorbed. test it yourself - put it in a glass of water and spit or water and small amt. of vinegar - it will sit there FOREVER. i tried armour and gained 20# in 19wk because i had no thyroid meds in my body! >>my surgery and my surgeon and thyroid doctor both say it is because I am not absorbing my thyroid pills correctly. My specialist is working on this with me and we have made some progress. Has anyone else had this problem? Or any kind of thyroid problem that affected their weight loss? *** the deal with thyroid is that we do not convert the T4 in synthroid and combined thryoid meds to T3. the body is suppose to do that naturally and we no longer do. besides the TSH test, do a full thryoid panel with T3 and T4 and free thyroxine and the whole nine yards. you will probably do best on synthyroid and then adding Cytomel. then you do not have to rely on your body to convert the T4 to T3 - cytomel gives you a dose of T3. an excellent book is Thyroid Power by Shames. get it, read it - you'll be surprised and amazed. another problem is that they recently changed the scale or range for TSH testing and have lowered it so more people will actually be hypothyroid now. problem still remains that we are undermedicated. most docs simply look at the range and say we are normal while if we are still symptomatic then we are not getting enough T4 [or 3]. one rule of thumb is to eliminate symptoms and not look at a very faulty blood test. you can have a TSH done 10 times over a week and get 10 different results. also consider adding more minerals, especially selenium to help with your thyroid. one short discussion at the plenary session i attended at the asbs was on hypothyroidism after wls. typically we need less thyroid meds and some people even go off their meds. that was the premise of the research and outcome. of course that is not my experience and i know several who had more difficulty regulating thyroid meds. its a hormone - some of which is stored in our fat cells - which we lose. sue
Guest guest
I haven't taken synthroid since a couple days before surgery 13 months ago and my levels are normal. My doctor was very suprised. He said he wouldn't have expected this to get better due to weight loss. Hopefully my levels will stay within the normal range. I don't seem to have any symptoms at this point. Jim K.
