Guest guest
Is there anyone who knows people who were successful at either getting fully off the diet or mostly off the scd diet after waiting for a year after their last symptom as recommended by ellaine? I myself know one person and that is encouraging to me but I was wondering because I cant imagine sticking to this forever or even for more than a year or two? Maybe its just my pregnancy talking...but there's so many foods I miss like chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal and bread. I'm not even talking about having those foods often just sometimes....If anyone has something to add I'd really appreciate it! Thanx, Becky
Guest guest
Becky, There are posts about people who have been able to tolerate non SCD foods and others who stay on SCD for a much longer time. Everyone is different. I started SCD about 11 months ago, and like you, felt sick, overwhelmed, and scared. The idea of SCD long term was daunting. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. I made the commitment to SCD, but took it one day at a time, each day adding to the next. It feels like a big change at first, but over time it becomes second nature. There are some wonderfully delicious SCD recipes and foods. It is not a deprivation. Once you start to feel better, you will realize how much you have gained from SCD. You will want to stay on it. Yes, it stinks to not be able to eat a chocolate chip cookie, but it is worse to feel sick. A year ago, my teen daughter wanted to take a short trip.I was too sick to take her. I am on that trip right now. I have a cooler of SCD food with me. Yes, that is inconvenient, yes, there are things I would like to eat and can't, but the important thing is that I am on this trip with my daughter. Right now you are feeling a lot of changes, pregnancy, new diet. Nine months from now, you will be facing the joys and challenges of a newborn. However, nine months from now you will have been on SCD the whole time. You will be used to it, and you will likely feel a lot better. Hang in there...one step at a time. Guest guest
In addition to everything PJ said, I can share my experiences but they are relatively the same. When I first started I was overwhelmed, scared, angry, exhausted, and a million other feelings at once. There were many many times I wanted to throw in the towel and quit. I didn't because I really wanted to not have to take medicine anymore and still eat "regular" foods. Now, SCD is second nature, and yeah it still sucks sometimes but you learn to deal. Like tonight, I went out with friends and played a drinking game. My cups were filled with water!! I still had a good time, and my friends understand what's going on. So, there are ways around it, you just can't pitty yourself over it.I can't even sit here and say the diet has helped me at all, but what it has done is give me hope. Everything i've read about Crohn's or UC (which I have) points to bacteria. Besides, use this as an experiment. Do the diet for 2 years and see where you're at. After one year you should have a great idea of everything you did wrong and get you won't be so overwhelmed. The second year will be for healing :)Or, read posts in CCFA and see what everyone is going through that's not on the diet. Posts in here are generally "i'm on such and such med but i'm doing ok and I reacted to a food last night, so I cut that out of my diet for now and i'm working my way back up to it" Whereas posts on CCFA and other websites are all about how Remicade is someone's last option before surgery. you don't have to read too many to start getting the general idea. It's ok not to do the diet, it's definitely not for everyone, but when I first started I looked at it exactly like you are. Something i'll be tortured with for a year and then stop. That was the wrong way to look at it. Now I look at it as I may have to do this for life, but at least i'll have a life. The cost of my time plus more expensive foods far outweigh the costs of meds and being ill all the time.-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 8 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 12 pills a day Prednisone 40mg entocort With vit E mixed inBack to intro/stage 1 for now.To: BTVC-SCD From: beckygd28@...Date: Sun, 21 Mar 2010 02:46:20 +0000Subject: gettting off diet one day Is there anyone who knows people who were successful at either getting fully off the diet or mostly off the scd diet after waiting for a year after their last symptom as recommended by ellaine? Guest guest
Becky -- To answer your main question, yes, I know of a person who had very serious Crohn's, and who is now on a largely " normal " diet (i.e. eats out at restaurants, has a slice of birthday cake, etc.). While I'm afraid I don't have details of his recovery, I do know that his journey took years. Like many others here, I can't imagine returning to the way I ate pre-SCD (though there are some illegals that I would happily welcome back to my diet). Even so, I must admit that I find it very encouraging to know that such healing is possible. Guest guest
Thank you so much for teaching us, Marilyn! It's great that you do! What would this forum be without your " crazy " advise and stories! Thank you again!
