Guest guest
I have yet to encounter a dentist or ortho who hasn't mentioned it to me :) so based on that, I would imagine that if you had it, your ortho would have mentioned it to you... but perhaps not. If you are concerned, ask your ortho :) Better to find out for sure one way or the other as opposed to worrying and wondering about it > > I came across something that mentioned tongue thrust and not knowing > what exactly it is, I had looked it up. I think that I have it but > my orthodontist and the ENT I saw regarding my tonsils had never > mentioned it to me. How do I know if I have it? Is anyone familiar > with it? and the treatment of it? Guest guest
Hi There A specialist in British Columbia told me that when I swallow my tongue pushes forward and that has resulted in my teeth pushing forward(over time). He also said that it could be caused by me having an open bite to begin with and that I developed the habbit from it. I sleep with my tongue pressed against my teeth all the time as it helps me to breathe through my nose. The doc said that a person may or may not be able to fix the tongue thrust as it is a habbit. He said some have success but basically you have to try to retrain your way of swallowing and sleeping. I am two months into braces and I have a very hard time sleeping with my open bite that is also made worse with the braces. I wake up all the time with my tongue pushed against my front teeth and I constantly worry that I will not be able to stop the habbit. We will just have to wait and see. I heard of a tongue thrust type of retainer that is supposed to help? I looked it up on the net and it has a small " basket " that I would assume that your tongue would push against rather than your teeth and it looked as though it would be braced on your back molars. Anyway I hope this helps you out. Tanja > > I came across something that mentioned tongue thrust and not knowing > what exactly it is, I had looked it up.
