OT but related: Home canning has become trendy

http://www.aldenteblog.com/2010/03/the-inevitable-canning-backlash.html

with more links to canning books and etc.

Also, has anyone bought a fermenting crock? They seem pretty expensive -

am just wondering what solutions people have come to - worth it, or an

alternate kind of thing is just as good, etc?

I started my first batch of homemade sauerkraut yesterday. The recipe I read

said that any lidded jar would do so I used a large glass canning jar. The

recipe said that the process was anaerobic so I'm hoping it turns out OK.

I didn't want to spend money on a new kitchen item so I hope it's not a failure

due to that.

> Homemade sauerkraut is still on my todo list, but I did find a relatively

inexpensive one gallon crock. Go to Amazon.com and do a search for " sauerkraut

crock " . Among the results you'll find an Ohio Stoneware Old Fashioned Crock for

about $15 USD.

I'd like to know how this goes also. I want to try some, but on a small

scale as DH would starve before he touched fermented anything, so I'm

interested in no more than quart-sized operations.
