Guest guest
Well I dont have much advice but my son was diagnosed as the same at 3 months and was fitted at 4 months and i was told this is the earliest they can do the helmet. The stretches are to improve the torticollis and they say repositionong helps with the plagio but i think that opinion varies by who you ask. Mom to Justice 7 months old taken out of 2nd starband From: Ashlee <ashlee3@...>Subject: Left Muscular Torticollis/PlagiocephalyPlagiocephaly Date: Sunday, May 3, 2009, 5:09 AM My son just got "diagnosed" with Left Muscular Torticollis/ Plagiocephaly. He is 16 weeks old however was 5 weeks early so for the treatment I guess they are considering him to be 11 weeks old. They gave us 3 exercises to do at home 3 times a day 30 seconds each. He has a 12 mm difference in his head and said if he were 6 months old he would qualify for a helmet. So I have a couple of questions. Is the exercises going to prevent a helmet? If not why do they wait until 6 months to wear the helmet if it could be helping now? Is there any way to avoid the helmet or is it just part of the treatment they get?? Any advice on what to expect would be helpful! Thanks in advance
Guest guest
HI! My dd also has left tort and right plagio. The exercise will not prevent the helmet... it will treat the tort. You can also see a PT to get more help with the stretches for tort, but it's really you (and dad) who will be doing most of the stretching. As far as the band goes, repositioning can help prevent a band. There is a section here all about repoing the baby. If the head does not round out by 5-6 mo then a band will be needed to achieve correction. But I will say that babies don;t have to wait until 6 mo... babies can be banded as young as 3mo. old... and actually the younger you band the better the degree of correction. AND the window to band is small... meaning that after about 18mo. or so a band won;t really so much to round out a head. You can always go for an evaluation at a band provider to see what they say - Cranial Tech does free evals if you have one near by. Also, I will say that the fact the your ped is on top of this is great - alot of parents have to struggle to get their drs to help or support the need for banding.
