Guest guest
I had white skin on my lips which eventually fell off - I'm guessing the result of surgery trauma. I didn't really examine inside my mouth 4 days postop, but wouldn't be surprised if there was skin trauma inside as well. Infection would probably give you more discomfort. > > I am 4 days post surgery - upper and lower - my mouth seems to feel > like it's swollen and there's white skin inside my cheeks - I don't > know if I'm having some type of allergic reaction - or if it's normal > and just the skin trauma from the surgery - has anyone experienced > this? right now it's 2 am and I'm thinking of calling my doctor. Guest guest
I am not a doctor but you might want to ask your OS about thrush which can be caused by antibiotics. My daughter had something similar when she was very young as a result of antibiotics. Guest guest
That white skin thing immediately makes me think of yeast infection (aka candidiasis, or thrush. If that's what it is, you want to know and put a stop to it ASAP. Not that it's particularly dangerous, but it can be annoying as the dickens, and hard to get rid of once it gets established. (It loves to grow in warm, moist, dark places. And what's a mouth that's been operated on? A w. m. d. place. Furthermore, it's likely that you have had a lot of powerful antibiotics, which kill off the normal fauna and flora that live in all our bodies and help protect us from yeast. And if you've been drinking all those sweet, soft drinks, you've also been feeding the yeast well. (To " Proof " yeast -- of a different kind -- before making bread, one mixes the yeast with some sugar and some warm water. If it " blooms " in response, it's still active. They may be able to tell from your description, or by looking. But certainly they can by doing a skin scraping and looking at it under a microscope. Guest guest
I'm no professional caregiver, but I'd guess that this was more like a typical kind of " chapping " that often happens after surgery. I don't know whether it's because wired folks can't lick their lips, or because the lips were dry so long during surgery, or just one of the body's adaptations. There are a number of things that can relieve such chapping. For me, Vitamin E oil was the best. Aquaphor is another salve that many have liked (made by Eucerin, available in pharmacies. Or Carmex. (Carmax? Can't remember. A lip balm.) > > I had white skin on my lips which eventually fell off - I'm guessing > the result of surgery trauma. Guest guest
I would just rinse with my prescription mouthwash and brush after every meal (liquid) with your baby tooth brush and rinse swish with salt water. Brushing the stitches helps them dissolve. Vaseline on the lips helps keep that dry skin from building up and lips peeling. Guest guest
Thanks for the tip - it was right on target...--- I had vaguely remembered the same from one of my 3 boys. well - I did make an early post op appt as i was having such anxiety in the middle of the night - wondering why did I do this huge step in having the surgery - that was 2am Sunday morning - I spent the rest of the night waiting for morning and then until my 2pm doc appt - In the end - it was thrush as the doctor prescribed an rx and it is a common side effect from the amoxycillin - today - the white spots are mostly gone after just taking the rx today - btw - the rx was for fluconazole - which did make me feel nauseous all day. but in the end - it's soooo much better now. Along with that - the swelling has continued to go down. In retrospect - my doctor did not give me a really clear idea of how difficult the first few days would be specifically. He did tell me by the first post-op appt, that pretty much you come in hating him.. I guess it's all in how you approach it - I was definitely having several down nights but now after a good day - I am looking forward to a good nights sleep.! Then tomorrow will be a day to figure out some good things to eat.
